Peter Hess served in the North Guard as a prison guard under the command of Col. G Pennington in York County, Pa. in 1778. He is listed on three different muster rolls relating to the Associators and Militia of the County of York, PA..

From the book "I Shook My Family Tree" by Thelma Hess Parsons

It may be that Jeremiah Hess of Germany, who arrived 15 September 1729 on the ship Thistle of Glasgow in the Port of Philadelphia, was the father of Baltzar Hess, who in turn was the father of Peter Hess, our ancestor. This assumption is based on information from The Compendium of American Genealogy, edited by Trederick A Virkus, Vol. VII, page 123.

Jeremiah Hess (will dated 1739) landed a Philadelphia, Pa 1730.

Baltzar, probably came to Shenandoah Valley, Va landholder in Bedford Co., Pa..

Peter (will dated, 1827, proved 1832); on Bedford Co., Pa. tax list as transient, 1783; to Monongalia Co. Va (now W Va.) bet. 1783-1786. .

Peter had tazable property in Monongalia C. as early as 1786. He and wife Elizabeth, were living in Shenandoah County, virginia, in Aeptember of 1827 as witnessed by the sale of land in Monongalia County to John R. Snider. But sale of land in August of 1828 to Elizabeth and Moses Barb, daughter and son-in-law, indicated they were living in Monongalia County. Peter was probably a member of the early Cheat Baptist Church. The Baptists organized a church near Cheat River in Monongalia County in 1775. Disciplinary trials were common in the early churches. In the Cheat Baptist Church, about 1787, the following grievance occurred..

Brothers John Barker and Peter Hess brought a charge against Rachel Pendall stating that her walk and conversation had been very disorderly..

Here is another traditional story involving our ancestor, Peter Hess..

There is an account handed down on stewart's Run that about 1790 or later, William, son of John Stewart, and another boy, both about fourteen years of age, were pursued by Indians while they were returning from the mill on Scotts Mill Run. The militia turned out, among whom were Joseph Barker and Peter Hess, and went in pursuit of the Indians, finding their campfires on the head of Scotts Mill Run, but failing to overtake them..

According to DAR records, Peter was born in Pennsylvania in 1755 and served as a prison guard commanded by Col. G. pennington, New Yourk Co., Pa. 1778. He is buried in Burnt Meeting House Cemetery across the Monongahelia River from Morgantown, West Virginia. The Col. john Evans Chaper, Daughters of the American Revolution, have marked the grave and recorded it. the inscription on the stone reads: Peter Hess Pvt. Pa. Troops Rev. War 1833..

The burial grounds of Peter Hess are on the site of the beginning of the Presbyterian Church in the area. A log meeting house was built about 1818, but it burned in 1845. The church was never rebuilt on that plot. However, the cemetery in connection with it is still known as the Burnt Meeting House Cemetery or Grave Yard. A part of the foundation of the log meeting house was visible in the east end of the cemetery in 1938. The cemetery is located one-half mile. N.W. of the junction of #45 and #19/4. It was established in 1819 as a private burial ground. No burial records were kept. It is still in use. There are 140 marked graves and approximately 50 unmarked..

Peter and wife Elizabeth, were parents of nine children who were named in his will which was executed 8 September 1827 and was probated in 1832. With the exception of Abraham, it is likely all of the children were born in Monongalia County, Virginia. Since Peter Hess is the first proven ancestor, he shall be represented as Generation I. His children will be Generation II..

Inscription: PVT. PA. Troops. Rev. War

Note: Married W. Elizabeth Lovell in 1776. She was born and died in PA.
