Peter Legh of Lyme and Haydock, esq

Peter Legh was the son of Sir Peter Legh of Lyme and Haydock, knight banneret, and his wife, Ellen, the daughter of Sir John Savage of Clifton.

Burke in his "Commoners" says this Peter Legh was born in 11 Henry VIII.[1] However, the inscription on his father's monument in Winwick church, says Ellen, the daughter of sir John Savage, died on 17 May 1491[2] therefore, this Peter could not have been born in 11 Henry VIII which is 1519, almost 30 years after his mother's death.

After his mother died, Peter's father was consecrated a priest.[2]

Peter married twice, his wives and children were:

Margaret, the daughter of Nicholas de Tyldesley.[1] Peter and Margaret had children:

1. Sir Peter Legh of Lyme and Haydock, knight, heir, married Margaret, the daughter of Thomas Gerard of Bryn co Lanc, esq[1]
2. Jane, married to Thomas Gerard of Bryn[1]

Jane the daughter of Peter Gerard of Bryn[1] Peter and Jane had children:

Cecilia, the wife of Thomas Butler of Bewsey[1]
Anne[1]

However, the only children Peter mentioned In his will were his daughters:

3. Alice[3]

More children were mentioned: siblings, in the 1575 will of “Dame Jane Gerarde of Bromley in the countie of Staff" as she styled herself,” in which Jane Gerard, nee Legh, names as executors her son Sir Thomas Gerarde, knight, her brother Sir Peter Legh knight, her son-in-law Robert Charnock, her cousin Henry Eccleston, esquires, and her trusty servant, Edmund Allat, leaving bequests to:[2]

• her son Sir Thomas Gerard knight;
• her daughter-in-law Dame Elizabeth Gerard;
• her son's children;
• Margaret Tarbocke, niece of Jane's son Tarbocke;

"Peres Legh of Bradley in the County of Lanc Esquier son and heyr of Peres Legh Knyght and Preist" made his will on 6 September in 31 Henry VIII [1539], in which he mentions his father's will, dated 1 December 1522.[3]

ELLEN SAVAGE, married by dispensation dated 1467 PETER LEGH, Knt., of Lyme (in Prestbury), Cheshire, and Dalton and Haydock, Lancashire, Steward of Blackburnshire, Tottington, Rochdale, and Clitheroe, son of Peter Legh, of Lyme (in Handley, Cheshire, and Dalton and Haydock, Lancashire, by Mabel, daughter and co-heiress of James Croft. He was born about 1455. They had four sons, 'Peter', John, Gowther, and Richard, and three daughters, including Margaret (wife of Laurence Warren, Esq.), and Alice (wife of ___ White). In his earlier life he followed the profession of arms, and was present at the siege of Berwick in 1482, where he was made a knight banneret by King Edward IV. His wife, Ellen, died at Bewganet, Sussex 17 May 1491. In 1511 he entered into holy orders and became a priest. In 1521 he joined Sir Thomas Butler and others in soliciting contributions to build Lymm steeple. he built the chapel of Disley and the Cage in Lyme Park in 1524. SIR PETER LEGH died at Lyme (in Prestbury), Cheshire 11 August 1527, leaving wills dated 1 Feb. 1521 and 1 Dec. 1522. He was buried at Winwick, Lancashire.
    • ' 14. PETER LEGH, Esq., of Lyme (in Prestbury) and Bradley, Cheshire, and Dalton and Haydock, Lancashire, born about 1479 (aged 48 in 1527). He married (1st) JANE GERARD, daughter of Peter Gerard, of Bryn (in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. They had three daughters, Cecily (wife of Thomas Butler), Jane (or Joan), and Anne. His wife Jane, died 5 May 1510. He married (2nd) before 1513 MARGARET DE TYLDESLEY, daughter of Nicholas de Tyldesley. They had three sons, Peter, Knt., George, and Robert, and six daughters, Katherine (wife of Peter Langton), Margaret (wife of Thomas Bruche), Ellen (wife of ___ Stanley), Elizabeth (wife of Lawrence Downes), Alice (wife of ___ Rowley), and Mary. PETER LEGH, Esq., died 4 Dec. 1541, leaving a will datede 6 Sept. 1536.

JANE (or JOAN) LEGH, married before 1522 (date of his father's will) THOMAS GERARD, Knt., of Bryn (in Ashton-in-Makerfield), Ashton (in Winwick), Brindle, and Rainhill, Whindle, and Windleshaw (all in Prescot), Lancashire, Kingsley, Cheshire, and Bromley, Staffordshire, Sheriff of Lancashire, 1548, 1553, son, and heir of Thomas Gerard, Knt., of Bryn (in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Brindle, Lancashire, Kingsley, Cheshire, etc., by Margery (descendant of King Edward I), daughter of Edmund Trafford, Knt. [see GERARD 14 for his ancestry]. He was born about 1502-12 (aged 11 in 1523, aged 38 in 1540). They had one son, Thomas, Knt., and one daughter, Katherine. He also had several illegitimate children, including a son, Thomas. In 1533 he 'would not be spoken with" by the herald. In 1536 he was expected to bring a contingent of 450 men to serve against the Pilgrimage of Grace. He was made a knight in 1544 during the invasion of Scotland. In 1552 he was claiming exemptions for the suppressed chantry of Windle. SIR THOMAS GERARD was living in 1553, but was dead before 1560. His widow, Jane, then of Bromley, Staffordshire, left a will dated 20 Nov. 1575.

He was born about 1460 (aged 30 in 1490). They had one son, Thomas, Knt., and four daughters, Joan (wife of Richard Done, Esq.), Isabel (wife of Richard Langton, Knt.), 'Jane (wife of Peter Legh, Esq.)', and Alice (wife of Thomas Radcliffe, Esq.). PETER GERARD, Esq., died 20 June 1494, and was buried in the Gerard Chapel at Winwick, Lancashire. His widow, Margery, was lliving in 1506.

THOMAS GERARD, Knt., of Bryn (in Ashton-in-Makerfield), Brindle, Ashton (in Winwick), and Rainhill, Windle, and Windleshaw (all in Prescot), Kirkby, and Skelmersdale, Lancashire, Woore, Shropshire, Bromley, Staffordshire, son and heir, born about 1488 (aged 6 in 1494). He married before 19 August 1511 (date of property settlement) MARGERY TRAFFORD, widow of Nicholas Longford, of Longford, Derbyshire, and daugher of Edmund Trafford, Knt., K.B., by Margaret (descendant of King Edward I), daughter of John Savage, K.G. (descendant iof King Henry II) [see TRAFFORD 13 for her ancestry]. They had five sons, Thomas, Knt., Peter, William, Gent., Henry, and James, and four daughters, Margaret (wife of Peter Legh, Knt.), Katherine (wife of Thomas Houghton, Esq.), Elizabeth (wife of Richard Bold, Esq.), and Anne (wife of Richard Assheton, Esq.), SIR THOMAS GERARD was slain fighting the Scots at Berwick-upon-Tweed 7 Nov. 1523 (his will dated 13 Sep. 1522). His widow, Margery, married (3rd) JOHN PORT (or PORTE), Knt., of Etwall, Derbyshire, Justice of the King's Bench (died testate shortly before 22 March 1539/40). She died 10 May 1540, leaving a will dated 30 April 1540, proved 5 June 1540, requesting burial in the church of Etwall, Derbyshire with her 3rd husband.

• ' Peter Legh, Esq. was born circa 1479 at of Lyme, Prestbury, Cheshire, England; Age 48 in 1527.1 He married Jane Gerard, daughter of Sir Peter Gerard and Margaret Stanley, circa 1503 at of Bryn, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire, England; They had 3 daughters (Cecily, Jane/Joan, & Anne).1 Peter Legh, Esq. married Margaret Tyldesley, daughter of Nicholas de Tyldesley, before 1513; They had 3 sons (Peter, George, & Robert) and 6 daughters (Katherine, Margaret, Ellen, Elizabeth, Alice, & Mary).3 Peter Legh, Esq. left a will on 6 September 1539. He died on 4 December 1541 at of Dalton & Haydock, Lancashire, England.1

• This Sir Peter Legh died at Bradley in 1478 at the age of sixty-three, and his eldest son, also a Peter, the fourth of his name, married, about 1449, Mabell, the heiress of the Crofts. She leaves a very curious will, dated 1474, in which there is mentioned an indenture of the 8 of July, 14 Edward IV, by which " Dame Mabell Lye, widow of Peres Legh," provides for her three younger sons, Hamond, James, and John, with 100 shillings yearly during their lives, the money "if they be evil deposit or wrong gydit" to go to her eldest son " Peersher," i.e. Piers or Peter. One hundred shillings would be equivalent to about L8o of the money of the present day ; but this would not appear to be a very munificent portion even for a younger son.

• By his wife Ellen, Sir Piers had four sons, and three daughters. His second son, Gowther, gave L10 a year towards a free school at Winwick, Lancashire (one of the oldest parts of the Legh property), which fact is notified by a brass on the school building erected by Gowther's great-nephew. Sir Peter Legh, in 1618, who augmented the grant by another yearly sum of L10, "for his zeal to God's glorye and his love to the parish of Winwick and common good of the country."

• In 1491, Sir Piers Legh lost his wife, to whom he was devotedly attached. She was buried at Bewgenet, in Sussex, but there is no record to show what took her there. Her husband, who never ceased to mourn her loss, retired from the world at her death and became a monk, probably influenced by his brother-in-law, the Archbishop of York.* He died at Lyme in 1527, and is buried at Winwick, the burial-place of the Legh family for many generations.
