About Peter "Fiddler" MacNeil

From page #130-131 in "History of Christmas Island Parish":

This John McNeil was commonly called Iain Mac Ruairidh by the early settlers. He was married to Ann, daughter of John McDougall (Og), who was an officer in the army before he settled on the mainland of Scotland, where he became a prosperous farmer.

The issue of this marriage was: Effie, John Og, Donald, Alex, Peter, Michael, Donald Og, Peggie, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Catherine.

From page #133 in "History of Christmas Island Parish":

Peter McNeil (Iain MacRuairidh) was a noted violinist, and his service was in great demand at match-makings and weddings. As a player of Scottish music, it is the general opinion that he never had an equal in this district except his brother, John Og. The latter had a sweeter finger and a neater bow; but for the loud, lively music for “break-downs,” Peter had no equal. He was playing at a wedding one time and a piper happened to be playing there too. They played “spell-about" during the night; but at dawn when the morning wedding reel was going on the floor, the groom told the piper to set up his pipes and play the “morning reel.” Now, in those days this was as much as to say that the piper was the better musician. Peter felt offended, but he made way for the piper. When the reel commenced, Peter went and stood at the door with the violin under his arm. His temper was up, and he said to a friend in Gaelic: “Cuiridh mi suas i.” “No,” said his friend; “don’t do that.” “E bhi dam ainte; cuiridh mi suas i,” said Peter; and he began to play the violin so loud that he drowned the music of the bag pipes. The piper had to give up the contest; and Peter played the reel to the end.

He settled at the Rear of Castle Bay, and married Jessie, daughter of John McKinnon (Iain Mac Eoin). Issue: — Teresa, Rory, John, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, Unice, Peggie, Sarah, and Joseph.

"History of Christmas Island Parish" - page #81:

Descendants of Jonathan McKinnon of Barra, Who Settled at Castle Bay.
This man was married and had a son named John who married Ann, daughter of Malcolm McDougall, Miller, of Barra. It seems that this couple was among the early immigrants that came to the Gulf and went from there to PEI. They had a family of one son and one daughter, Jonathan, and Jessie. After the death of her husband, this Mrs. McKinnon and her family came and settled at Castle Bay on the land now occupied by Malcolm McInnis. Her son, Jonathan, received a fair education in PEI. He was twice married. By his first wife he had two children, Peter, and Flora. The latter married Michael McDonald (Iain Eoin) who settled at N. S. East Bay. His second wife was Peggie, daughter of Neil McNeil (Goillicean) of Grass Cove, Victoria Co. Issue: -- Mary, Ann, Michael, and John. About fifty years ago, this family left the parish and settled near Reserve Mines. Michael went to sea and was drowned near Halifax. John is a miner. He settled in Cumberland County.

Jessie McKinnon married Peter McNeil, Fiddler, Rear Castle Bay.
