He was required to leave school at an earlyage to drive camelteams in the north of Western Australia fo rhis father, carting wool, water and sandlewood. Jack had a natural aptitude for maths but could only do theworkings as such in his head, adding up rows of figures, withouterror very easily. His aspirations to be a teacher were notpossible due to his inability to demonstrate his mathscapabilities on paper and his limited education. Early in his married life Jack worked as an underground minerat the Prohibition Mine in Meekatharra and later gained furthermining experience at Big Bell and the Happy Jack in Wiluna. In1948 the family moved south to Norseman and later to Boulderwhere Jack worked as a Winder Driver. In 1958 when working on the Perserverance Mine in Boulder Jack was due to start shift at 7am; twenty minutes before he sat inthe Drivers Seat, the mine, the poppet headandthe housingcontaining the drivers seat all caved in - falling some severalhundred feet underground. No one was killed as the previousshifthad ended at 6:30 AM and the day shift miners and driverhad not commenced. Photography of him sitting in this verydrivers seat is providedas part of this family history.Jack Boase, as he was known to his family and friends retiredfrom his job as a Winder Driver at the age of70when he decidedthat it was too risky to continue in his position. As awinderdriver he was responsible to lower the mine workers andequipment to the various levels underground into the mine. Itwas necessary to stop the cage containing the men at the preciselevel miningwas being carried out. Should the cage beinglowered by the Winder Driver jolt or fall, men could be injuredor killed . Jack felt this responsibility personally and whenhe knew he could no longer carry out this dutyto the best ofhis ability he chose to retire. He died only sometwo years later at the Kalgoorlie RegionalHospital and is buried withhis "Dorrie" in the Catholic portionof the Boulder Cemetary.
