General Philemon Thomas- 1763-1849; the epitaph on his tombstone in National Cemetery at Baton Rouge: “To the memory of Philemon Thomas [who] was born in Orange County, Virginia, February 9, 1763, died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, November 18, 1847. This tablet is created by his children. He was a soldier 1776-1814 and a member of the convention that framed the constitution of Kentucky, and a member of her legislature. He moved to Louisiana in 1806, commanded forces which captured the Spanish Fort at Baton Rouge in 1813(?). [He] served next year in the Legislature in Louisiana. Was twice elected to Congress of U.S. Throughout his career he was called a patriot and a good citizen. We know him to be a kind father and a fine Christian!”
