About Pierre Finch Martineau Burrows

Architect of government buildings in Wellington. He was of Huguenot descent, born at Norwich, and arrived in Auckland on the "Victory" in 1865. He married Sarah on 12 July 1866 in St David's Presbyterian Church Auckland, and had a son, Arthur Martineau. By 1874, the couple had moved to Wellington where Burrows was appointed draughtsman in the Colonial Architect's Office of the Public Works Department. He took over the duties of Colonial Architect when William Clayton died in 1877, although he was not officially given that title. He returned to Auckland in 1884, but returned again to Hunterville and later Wellington (1905) to work for the Public Works Department. As well as the Government Buildings, his works included Christchurch Post Office (1877), Mount Cook Gaol (1884), New Plymouth Gaol, Auckland Hospital, Mount Eden Gaol. He retired in 1908. (See article in "Stockade", no 29 (1996), pages 19-23). Buried at Te Henui Cemetery, Taranaki with his wife. Source: National Library of New Zealand.
