Piet (86), who was attacked on 23rd January 2018, was in a coma and died in hospital four months later on 15th May. His partner, Rikkie Alsemgeest (86), was also assaulted and raped during the attack.
The Northern Cape Trio crime unit are investigating a farm murder and rape after an elderly couple was badly assaulted and robbed on their farm just outside Kimberley. They were were assaulted and tortured for hours and, among other things, burned with a hot clothing iron.
The perpetrators cut open the safe with an angle grinder and fled with a large quantity of valuables, a hunting rifle and a white Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle was later found abandoned on the R31 near Phutanang outside Kimberley.
Perpetrators - Morapedi Rankali (Lesotho), Motlalentswe Qautse (South African), Thuso Ramollo and Lebohang Melesi, appeared in court on 18th February 2020, bail was granted of R1000 each. After numerous postponements, the case has been again postponed to July 2020 by the Northern Cape High Court.
A fifth male suspect (32) was arrested by the SAPS Flying Squad on 19 February 2019, at a house in Donkerhoek, Kimberley. A firearm was also confiscated by the police. The suspects should be appearing in Court soon. The investigation continues.
According to Rikkie's son, Niel Alsemgeest, Piet had been in hospital since the attack and was transferred from the high care unit to the intensive care unit. He was also treated in isolation. According to Alsemgeest, Piet's condition had deteriorated over a few weeks and his organs began to fail. "He has suffered badly for the past two to three weeks. It is very rough for my mother, but it is a relief that he is no longer suffering”
Update 13/04/2021: The SAPS Frances Baard District Task Team is requesting assistance in the search for Mapula Gladys Mojaki (23).
Sadly on Wednesday 6th July 2022, the body of Piet's other son, Adré Els (41), was found in the field on his game farm in the Schmidtsdrift area near Kimberley. His body was discovered by family members. According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sergio Kock, Els had a wound in his head and there was a firearm at the scene. "The police suspect no foul play," says Kock.
