VA Continental Line Revolutionary War - 1753 Germantown 1835 Yorktown

Neal, Micajah b. 1753 d. Feb. 24, 1836, b. Orange, Virginia, VA Continental Line Revolutionary War, 1753 Germantown, 1835 Yorktown. He was married to Mildred Beasley and had a son James Neal. (per Shelby News paper)

According to my findings Micjah is actually buried in the Tick Creek Cemetery which was not moved when the Guist Creek Lake was put in and is therefore under water unless we have a major drought.

According to FAG member #48523954 says Micajah was married to Mildred Beasley.

I was researching my ancestor, Micajah Neal, who is buried in Shelby County, KY and whose grave you identified (thank you!). It seems there is conflicting information on his origins. The gravestone you photographed has the birth date of 1753, but no location. The recollection of his grandson, William S. Neal, was that Micajah and two brothers emigrated from England to Fauquier County, Virginia. Micajah enlisted under General Washington and was at the battle of Germantown, endured the winter at Valley Forge, and witnessed the surrender of of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Micajah married Mildred Beasley, a native of Fauquier Co., VA, and they moved to Shelby Co., KY in 1800 with their son, James, and other children.

One book, History of Hamilton County, Indiana, published in 1880 says that Micajah Neal's family emigrated from England and he was a native of Virginia, and that Micajah and Mildred had 10 children. It states that James was born in 1783 and died in 1874. The Centennial History of Washington County, Indiana: Its People, Industries and Institutions By Warder William Stevens (1916)confirms much of this information, though they list Micajah Neal's date of death as 1832 rather than 1835 (which the grave you found confirms).

The recollection of William Neal is that his father, James, was born on October 13, 1783 in Fauquier Co., VA. This date is included in the published sketch of William Neal in A History of Hamilton and Madison Counties (Indiana) by Biographical Publishing Co., Chicago, 1893, and the two books cited above. William was born in Shelby Co., KY on May 2(4?), 1818 and moved later to Hamilton Co., Indiana. He died in Cicero, IN in 1901.

William Neal was my mother's great-grandfather, which is why I have some of the family records. Neal was a very common name in Virginia and Indiana, but I have my mother's line traced back to Micajah. This is probably way too much information, but I do appreciate you publishing the photo of Micajah's grave stone and including some brief information about him!

Best regards,

Mennette Larkin
