Dr. Karl Stoerk (b. September 17, 1832 in Ofen (part of Budapest) and d. September 13, 1899 in Wien) was an Austrian laryngologist and the brother of the lawyer Felix Stoerk. He studied medicine at the Universities of Prague and Vienna and received his PhD in 1856. He was then Assistant to Louis Tuerck, with whom he developed the laryngoscope. In 1864 he became the first professor of laryngology habilitation. Eleven years later he became a full professor at the University of Vienna, where he headed the newly established Laryngology Clinic. A bust of him stands in the Universität Wien, Arkadenhof.
KARL STOERK (1832-1899) was assistant to the neurologist Turck, who introduced the laryngoscope in medical practice, but Stoerk was the first who applied medications to the larynx and performed operations by the use of his laryngoscope. He discovered many instruments for the use in the practice of laryngology, including an endoscope for the examination of the esophagus. He became the director of a new clinic for Laryngology at the General Hospital. From "Hungarian Physicians at the Second Medical School in Vienna", International Society for the History of Medicine.
