Helped the Boer forces in the Anglo-Boer war and wrote a book "Twee jaren in den Boeren Oorlog" I.e. "Two years in the Anglo-Boer war"

Did a second doctorate in law, studying land ownership in the USA.

Major of Velsen in the Netherlands, also had to handle the famine and rationing during the first world war (The Netherlands remained nuetral in that war - like Switserland).

Moved to South Africa in 1920 when the law faculty at the University of Stellenbosch started and lectured in law subjects till deep in his 80's. Many of south Africa's prominent Judges and Advocates (and many Politicians) were his students.
