About William D. Spring, Pvt. CSA
William D. Spring served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War as a Private in Company D, 64th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He enlisted on February 20, 1863 at Albany, Georgia. He was captured by Union forces on June 17, 1864 during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. From Petersburg, he was sent to Point Lookout Military Prison in Maryland, arriving on June 24, 1864. He stayed at Point Lookout for a month, after which he was sent to Elmira Military Prison in Elmira, New York on July 27, 1864. He arrived at Elmira on July 30, 1864 and stayed there until his death of Scorbutus (scurvy) on March 11, 1865. He was buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, New York in the Confederate section in plot number 2428.
