About Pvt. Joel Mankins

Joel Mankins served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted in Company K, Virginia 50th Infantry Regiment on 22 Jun 1861 in Wythe County, Virginia alongside his brother James Mankins. He was captured on July 5, 1863 in Cashtown, PA, during the retreat after the Confederate loss at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was sent to Point Lookout Confederate Prisoner of War Camp in Maryland in Oct 1863. He died in Point Lookout Prison of Smallpox on 20 Nov 1863. He was buried in Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery.
