JONATHAN3 WOODY (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1) was born June 15, 1756 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died Aft. April 15, 1850 in Iowa. He married MARY MOLLY LOVINGOOD(LOVEL) 1776 in North Carolina. She was born 1756 in South Carolina, and died 1845 in Woody Gap, GA.
Notes for JONATHAN WOODY: Jonathan's migration - Greenville, SC, Buncombe, Haywood, Swain and Macon County area in North Carolina. Franklin County, Georgia, John Wesley Woody's migrations - Josiah born here. Dahlonega then south where family spent later part of the War Between the States. Crawfordsville, is where the family lived from 1865 until 1868. Some then moved on to Platte County, Missouri and Lincoln County, Kansas.
In early July 1782, Jonathan Woody enlisted in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Cox, Surry County, NC. In his Revolutionary War pension file #S17211 he states that he saw no combat and served as a volunteer, not a substitute. He listed two older brothers, William and James, who also served during the Revolution.
Although Jonathan Woody served in the Revolutionary War, he couldn't read or write. He was unaware of his veteran's pensions benefits, until a relative called it to his attention when he was 91 years old.

Notes
The first William Woody was said to be born in Kent, England, about 1724. He married Sara Persel, said to be of Irish royalty. They settled in Bedford County, Virginia. Of their several children William married Elizabeth Lovel and Jonathan married her sister Mary.
Jonathan was born June 15, l756, in northeast corner of Surrey Co., N. C. He volunteered in American Revolution July 1, 1782. He was sent to Georgia for the Creek Indian wars. Lived in Abbot Co.; Ga. three years until 1787, then 15 years in Greenville County, S. C. In l8l5 or 1816 moved to Haywood Co, N. C. About l825 Moved to Macon Co., N. C. l834 or l835 moved to Union Co (Ga.?) until 1842 or 1843. At Woody's Gap, Lumpkin Co., Ga., near Dahlonega he lost his wife in l843. He had 4 sons: John, b. 1781 went to S. C. and Ga., Josiah Askew settled in lincoln Co., Kansas, and William Berry and James who went to Wapello Co., Iowa and named their settlement Dahlonega. Some of their descendants lived in Calif., Nevada and Montana.
In 1845 the father decided to join his sons, William Berry and James, in Iowa. "Though close to 100 years' old, he rode horseback alone from Georgia to Iowa."
