About Pvt. Peleg Gorton, Sr

Peleg Gorton was the great-great-grandson of the Governor of Rhode Island Colony, Samuel Gorton (1592-1677), and was born to Dr Samuel Gorton IV & Ruth Gorton, nee Slade, in what was then Swansea Rhode Island.

He moved from Rhode Island to Vermont about 1778. In 1781 he came to Corning, Steuben Co, NY where he purchased a large parcel of land in Painted Post, NY from the Phelps-Gorham land Co.

Peleg was killed by a runaway team of horses in Rensselaer Co, NY before he could move his family to Painted Post. His sons came to the land on which sits a portion of Corning, NY.

He served in the Revolution as follows -

DAR record A046322, rank-Private, Col. Kilian Van Rensselaer's 4th Regt, Albany Co Militia.

Peleg Gorton sold his Rhode Island estate and put his fortune into the Revolutionary cause.

He died with his daughter Dorcas who was also in the wagon with him when the horses ran, killing them both.

His daughter Sarah had married Jacob Cole, Jr. and they along with all the children also came to Steuben County, NY and settled in the town of Addison in what is now Rathbone, close by to the Tracy family on Tracy's Creek.

He married DORCAS WOOD January 22, 1769 in Swansea, RI (now MA). She was born April 23, 1747 in Massachusetts, and died May 28, 1830 in Corning, Steuben Co, NY.

Burial Location

These are the remaining stones in the cemetery. Copied in the 1950's by the former Miss Elsie Clute of 3 Brown Road, Corning, NY, and Mr. Robert Newkirk, now of NY City. Miss Clute, now deceased was born and lived all her life until she sold and bought on Brown Road, the second house from the cemetery. Miss Clute had told me that she had heard her father and mother speak of how mad they had gotten with the family in the house beside the cemetery. That the cemetery had been over where this family had their garage built and driveway put in over that part. Many stones lost at that time
