Samuel was the sixth of ten children born to Samuel Cady and Elizabeth Winter of Killingly, Connecticut and Shutesbury, Mass. He was married first in Shutesbury on 2 December 1787 to Kezia Richardson, who had died by 1805. He then married second on 29 December 1805 to Grace Adams, the daughter of Asa Adams and Grace Ward of Shutesbury.
Samuel served for about three years during the Revolutionary War. He moved with his family from Shutesbury to Gates, in Orleans County, New York, where he lived the remainder of his life. However, he died while visiting E. Wallingford, Vermont, and this is where he is buried with family members. He had eight children, all with his first wife.
While there is no record of his burial here, it is not unlikely that Samuel is buried here where his sister, Rhoda, and brother-in-law were later buried.
