William served as a Private in the Confederate Army in Company H, 34th Alabama Infantry Regiment. The 34th Alabama was organized at Loachapoka, Alabama on April 15, 1862 and contained men from Montgomery County, Tallapoosa County and Russell County. They surrendered on April 26, 1865.
