Quatie was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Quatie Conrad was born about 1790 in the Cherokee Nation, the daughter of two Cherokees, Gunrod and his wife Onai, or Ali. She was the sister of Rattlinggourd, Hair, Youngwolf, and Terrapinhead. Very little is known about her other than the names of her husbands and children. [1]The Moravian missionaries mentioned her brothers multiple times, but made no mention of Quatie. She had at least eight children by three different men. Starr records her first husband as “Alexander” Brown, their child as John Lucien Brown, but testimony from Eastern Cherokee applications and other records list John’s father as “James” Brown, possibly the James who was the husband of Jennie Vann. [2] The Moravians did record that Jennie left her husband because he had been unfaithful.

Quatie and Archibald Fields were the parents of Mary, George, Jennie, John, Louisa, and Martha. [3]

Quatie and John Benge were the parents of Anderson Benge. [4]

Quatie’s date and place of death are unknown. All of her living children went to Indian Territory. Both James Brown and John Benge were conductors of detachments on the Trail of Tears. [5] Quatie does not appear on the any of the 1851 Cherokee censuses, so she had apparently died by then.

Research Notes

  • Unsourced Find-a-Grave memorial states that Quatie died in Arkansas 2/1/1839 on the Trail of Tears. [6]
  • Not the same as Quatie Brown
  • Not the wife of Alexander Brown
