_________________________________________________

Rabbi Mordechai [Markus] Tauber-Darnowitz appears to have been the eldest surviving son of R’ Jacob Moses Tauber, and the second-born behind his older brother Jonas who died in his youth.

In 1768, he is seen paying dues to the Leipnik Jewish community. According to Rabbi Hillel’s history, R’ Mordecha Tauber was “head of the synagogue” in 1769.

In the 1770s, he took a rabbinical post in Hungary — either in Trencin megye or in Nitra megye — and moved some of his family there. His oldest son Jonas stayed in Leipnik and was given his father’s familanten status. [Jonas was sometimes referred to as “Jonas Markus Tauber” to denote he was the son of R’ Mordechai (Markus) Tauber.] His other sons by his first marriage — Isak [Itzig], Jechiel, Baruch, Samuel, Herschel, and David — all went with him (or followed him) to western Hungary [now Slovakia].

Following the death of his first wife Judith, he m. 2nd, in Hungary, c1780, Rosina, b. c1755, and had a second family of children by her. Where they first resided is unknown, but between 1788 and 1795, they moved to Betzko, Trencin megye, Hungary [now Beckov, Slovakia]. R’ Markus Tauber is not listed in the 1788 Jewish census of Betzko, but is enumerated there in 1795.

Inferiori, Trencin Co., Hungary, 1795: TAUBER, Marek, with wife, two sons, and one daughter

R’ Mordechai [Markus] Tauber died in Betzko about 1807. His widow Rosina is seen living in Beczko, a widow, in 1809:

Beczko, Trencin Co., Hungary, 1809: TAUBER, Rosina relict vidua [widow], with one son, two daughters, and one other blood relative.
