Rabbi Shlomo Elimelech HaKohen Rabinowitz, A.B.D. of Zawiercie

Elimelech Rabinovicz was born in Radomsko in 1895 to Natan and Yehudit. He was a rabbi and married to Hinda. Prior to WWII he lived in Zawiercie, Poland. During the war he was in Zawiercie, Poland. Elimelech perished in 1942 in Buchenwald,

But according to Ernst Israel Bornstein who was born in Zawiercie, and survived the holocaust, he was shot in January 1945 in Grossrosen. The foolwing is an excerpt of the book THE LONG NIGHT:

EXCERPT FROM APPENDIX B – FELLOW RESIDENTS IN THE GHETTO AND CAMPS

“At the end of 1943, the Nazis also transferred our camp to Fünfteichen. In January 1945, when the Red Army marched in the direction of Breslau, the Nazis led our camp on foot to the main camp in Grossrosen…

After a few days of bloody wanderings we arrived in the main camp of Grossrosen. There we found many thousands of inmates from Auschwitz. There wasn’t any place to lie down, not even on the floor. Here, in Grossrosen, I found the Zawiercie Rabbi, Rav Shlomo Elimelech. Despite the fact that he was physically completely broken, he was filled with optimism and faith that the end of Nazis is coming near. He recounted to me how the Zawiercie residents in Auschwitz had helped him. Zawiercie girls used to smuggle flour to him. They even managed to bake him challot for Rosh Hashanah…

When we had to leave Grossrosen on another death-march, the Rabbi – who was unable to walk – remained behind. The SS shot him dead.”

רבינוביץ, שלמה אלימלך, בן האדמו"ר נתן נחום רבינוביץ.

תחילה כיהן כרב בקרומולוב, שעל יד צ'נסטוחוב, אחר כך בקמינסק, שעל יד ורשה, ובסוף, אחרי מחלוקת קשה וממושכת עם הרב אריה צבי פרומר התמנה להיות רבה של זאוויירצ'ה, שבאזור זגלמביה. גורש לאושוויץ, שם עבד בסדנה לחייטות, והשתדל ללמוד תורה. כשהתקרבו הרוסים לאושוויץ, בתחילת 1945, שולח לבוכנוולד, ושם נפטר זמן קצר לפני השיחרור.

רבי שלמה אלימלך רבינוביץ, כיהן כרבה של זאווירטשה, בעת שכיהן שם אביו באדמורו"ת. הוא היה חתן דודו רבי יחזקאל רבינוביץ מראדומסק בעל הכנסת יחזקאל.
