About Rabbi Zev Schwartzman

Rabbi Zev Schwartzman was probably born in Zagorow, Poland, as his descendants were from that town, in 1848. However, his birth record is located and stored in the archives of Kolo, Poland, in the same province of Kalisz Gubernia, Poland. In Polish records his name is indexed as Wolf, not Zev. Both names have the same meaning, they're just in different languages. He went by Zev and was legally known as Wolf. HEBREW DATE OF DEATH: ז" כיסלו, תרצ"ד What little information is known about Zev has been taken from his son, Rabbi Yisroel Moshe Schwartzman's, headstone, where it says: Rav Yisroel Moshe Schwartzman (from Zagorow) son of Rav Zev Schwartzman. From this we can gleam that Zev, like his descendants, was a ordained as a rabbi in Poland. Since Yisroel Moshe was born in Zagorow (according to his headstone), we can infer that although his birth record is located in Kolo just as his father's is, that may not be the location that he was actually born in, just where the record of his birth is stored. Many smaller towns like Zagorow kept their records in larger archives which is why there is a good chance that Zev was indeed from Zagorow, Poland.

Based on the information from Yisroel Moshe's headstone, the record of Zev's birth as well as his marriage to Sura Schwartzman (nee Szmeitana), a record revealing Zev's birth in the Kolo archives in 1848 is found to be accurate as he is documented there as being the father of Yisroel Moshe and his birth-date coincides with his generation the Schwartzman heritage. This crucial record not only points out Zev's birth and his marriage, but also reveals the family tree of his wife Sura and also reveals siblings of both Zev and his son Yisroel Moshe that weren't previously known. From this record we can connect to many other family trees from Poland through marriage and through blood (distant cousins) and we can go back 2 generations further to Zev's parents and grandparents. Rabbi Zev Schwartzman most probably passed away in Poland on an unknown date
