Origins

William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 6, No. 2, Supplement (Oct., 1897), pp. 1-58 THE GOODWIN FAMILIES IN AMERICA BY JUDGE JOHN S. GOODWIN Specifically, Page 5-7 states: link

Assuming this connection as proved, JAMES GOODWIN married, 1st Rachel -, whose tombstone on Back Creek, York county, Va., says that she was born in 1630, and died May 23, 1666, leaving, as it states, by Major Goodwin, five sons and two daughters. The tombstone bears an "impalement", by which is meant a division of the shield into two equal parts; the right, or dexter, representing the husband, and the left, or sinister, representing the wife. The right side in this case is too much worn to make out, but the left is divided quarterly; one and four, a bend; two and three, three bars. This quartering ought to give the names of the father and mother of Rachel Goodwin. Now, among those for whom Major Goodwin got "head rights", besides Mrs. Blanche Parry, Mrs. Ann Gooch, Robert Goodwin, John Goodwin, and "myself and wife", was one John Porter; and "three bars or" are the arms of Porter of County Warwick, England. With great confidence, then, it might be assumed that the mother of Rachel Goodwin was a Porter.++ The other two quarters, containing each a bend, are too general for identification. Captain Gooch is called "brother" by Major James Goodwin; and Henry Gooch was, in 1660, the husband of Milicent Kinsey, widow of Robert Kinsey.

Rachel Porter Goodwin's tombstone was located along the new Dandy Loop Road and near Back Creek, but is now missing. She is the first wife of Major James Goodwin, who was born in London about 1625, son of London salt merchant, Peter Goodwin. James came to Virginia in 1650. He was a justice with a title Major in the militia from 1657 to 1662 and in 1658 he represented York County in the House of Burgesses, also its' Speaker. He was a plantation owner and grew mostly tobacco and corn. They had seven children: Robert, Job, Peter, Matthew, Martin, Susannah, and Elizabeth. Rachael was the daughter of John Porter of Norwich County, England. Their homestead was an imposing two-story structure facing Goodwin Island on the Thorofare in what is known as Dandy. The house was torn down shortly after 1900. It was reported to be located where "Powell Beatty" once lived.

Goodwin became a magistrate in York County, a speaker in the House of Burgesses and a major in the militia. He married, the story goes, a sickly and the last of the maidens brought to the colony to be taken as wives. The Goodwin homestead was a two-story imposing structure facing Goodwin Island on the Thorofare (where Powell Beatty lives). People still remember the house that was torn down shortly after 1900. Goodwin and his wife Rachel raised five sons and two daughters before she died May 23, 1666 at age 36. Goodwin remarried an Elizabeth who evidently inherited Goodwin's 1200 acres. The rent rolls of England listed her in York in 1704 with Peter Goodwin owning 400 acres in York. Rachel's tombstone was broken up when a roadway was built through the Goodwin burial plot in 1945 in connection with the construction of the Pan American Refining Corporation processing plant (today's AMOCO). Peter Goodwin became heir to the property in 1731...."
