Preponderance of evidence point to her father being Joshua Allen or his son James Allen
THE CASE OF THE TWO SISTERS IN THE JOSHUA ALLEN FAMILY.
RACHEL ALLEN Family history says that Rachel Allen, b.1801 [1795] is a sister to Samuel Allen b. 1803. She is known to have married William Noble and James A. Davidson. Rachel’s Request for Marriage license to marry William follows:
To Mr. Abner Baker the Clerk of Clay County Court this here is to certify that I am willing for William Noble to get license to Marry me and my age is 23 years old Also stating that I have been living with my brother in law six years and I have not seen my father and mother for the term of six years. And I don’t know whether they are dead are alive and I am my own women. Hoping that you will give him license and not find not. William Noble X and Rachel Allen X Witness John Hickman X Clay County, I hereby certy that
12th day of August 1818
On the 27th day of August 1818 fifty pounds was paid to the county and the marriage was authorized and conducted. William Noble marked x and John Hickman mark x.
There is a question as to the truth of this marriage license request. Rachel states, that in 1818 she is 23 yrs old, this making her born abt. 1795. [We also know that her sister Malinda was also b. 1795, I know of no twin history between these two sisters.] In those days you had to get your folks permission to marry if you were under 21 yrs. It appears that her parents were unavailable or didn’t approve at this 1818 date and she wanted to get married, so she lied about her age.
Evidence of the lie is: (A).On the 1830,40,50,60 and 70 Census of Clay Co. Rachel maintained a consistence birth year within 1 yr. +/- of 1801. (B).It could be a different Rachel Allen but, on Rachels daughter’s death certificate it states: James Davidson father and Rachel Noble mother. On the marriage records of Clay it lists James Davidson and Rachel Allen, no Noble mentioned.
Rachel Allen states she is 23 years old [b. 1795] on her marriage license request to County Clerk, to marry William Allen in 1818. She also states she hasn’t seen her father or mother for 6 years [since 1812, is the approx. time they left Grayson Co., VA. So this part of the statement fits.] and don’t know if they are dead or alive. She states also that she came with her brother-in-Law. John B. Hickman and William Noble sign off on her statement for marriage license request and bond money. [We know that John Hickman lives by Nathan and William Noble in 1816 and he came from Grayson Co., VA. He could be the brother-in-law but his family on the 1820 census doesn’t give me the impression that his wife is a sister to Rachel. Austin Niece, is her brother-in-law but, I believe isn’t, the brother-in-law who she came with to Clay Co., KY, because of the age of his youngest child. He married Malinda Allen in abt.1817/19 in Clay Co. and but he is from Russell Co. VA. I haven’t found him in Grayson Co. VA, or that the Allens where ever in Russell Co, VA. Tavner Hays arrived in1813 and Barney Russell arrived in 1816 one of them could also be the mystery brother-in-law. In 1819/1820 Barney Russell lived next to Austin and Malinda.
....... Clay Co marriage records show Rachel Allen and William Noble married 8/27/1818, also show Rachel Allen, w/o William Noble, married James A. Davidson, 4/27/1827.

Perry Davidson was the child of James A. Davidson and Rhoda Morris. James A. and Rhoda married about 1822 and had 3 children:Robert, Dorcas & Perry. James A. then married Rachel Allen Noble, the widow of William Noble. They married April 27,1827 in Clay County, KY and settled on Bullskin Creek. James A. and Rachel Had Hansford (my ggg grandfather), Samuel, Levi, Emery, Sarah, Malinda (my gg grandmother), Nancy A., Letta, James, Martha, Elizabeth, and Sally.
James A. was the son of John Madison Davidson. John M. was the son of Daniel Davidson. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War.
Grandma Malinda was interviewed by Rev. John Jay Dickey and she tells of her father and grandfather, John Madison. She tells about him fighting a bear.
Mr. Selden Davidson wrote a wonderful book "Eastern Kentucky Davidsons". He doesn't have my family in the book correct; however, he did a very good job on the book.
