Raymond James Madsen was born July 15, 1900, to Jacob Madsen and Mary Catherine Krogue Madsen in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho. In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomington, their family was listed as follows: Jacob, 50, Mary C., 44, Vera M., 19, Ilta G., 16, Newel J., 12, Raymond, 9, LaRue, 7, and Sarah A., 3 years old. Jacob and Mary had been married for 22 years and had given birth to 6 children, all of whom were still living. Jacob was born in Utah, Mary and all their children in Idaho. Both sets of Jacob and Mary's parents were born in Denmark. Jacob was working as a farmer and owned his own farm free from a mortgage. They could all read and write except for the 3 youngest children.
On September 12, 1918, when Raymond completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card in Driggs, Teton county, Idaho, he described himself as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. He was 18 years old and was living in Driggs, Idaho, working as a farmer for his father, Jacob Madsen.
In the 1920 census the family was living in Logan, Cache County, Utah, at 26 East 4th North and were listed as follows: Jacob, 60, Mary, 54, Ilta, 26, Newel (erroneously listed as Niel), 22, Raymond, 19, LaRue, 17, and Sarah, 13. The only person in their family who was listed with an occupation was Ilta, working as a stenographer for Utah Mortgage and Loan Company.
On February 17, 1930, Raymond married Anna Josephine Watkins in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 1930 census dated April 19th found them living in the Clover Valley, Lincoln county, Nevada, in a home they were renting for $20 per month located on County Road. Raymond was working as a timekeeper for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was 29 years old and Anna was 31 years old.
By 1940, Raymond J., 40, and Anna J., 41, were living at 1012 South 1st West in Salt Lake City, Utah, and he was working as a civil engineering supervisor doing investigation of some water reservoirs. They were renting their home for $9 per month. Raymond had 7 years of college education and Anna had 1 year. For the 52 weeks he worked in 1939 at 42 hours per week, his income was $1,800. It doesn't appear that Raymond and Anna ever had any children, unless they were born late in their lives.
In a 1948 U.S. City Directory listing Raymond J. and Anna J. Madsen were living at 419 E 2nd Street, Apartment #55, and he was working as an engineer for the Utah State Water & Power Board.
In a 1960 directory listing Raymond and Anna were living at 63 4th East, Apartment #24, and he was working as an engineer for the State Water & Power Board.
In a 1972 city directory listing, Raymond and Anna were still living at 63 4th East, Apartment #24 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and he was working as an engineer with the State Division of Water Resources. Raymond would have been 72 years old at the time. In the same directory listing there was a Raymond L., and Violet Madsen, living in Murray, Utah, and he was working as a mechanic for the Utah Air National Guard. I wonder if he was a son of Raymond and Anna!
