Biography
Rebecca Rosa Carson, daughter of James Carson and Mary Fitzgerald, was born about 1851 (based on her age at death) possibly in Ireland (despite her obituary suggesting she was a native of Geraldton)
Rebecca married James Edwin Townshend in 1880 in Geraldton, Western Australia. [1]
Rebecca Rosa Townshend died from Typhoid Fever in 1897, just 38 years of age, in Geraldton, Western Australia. [2] Her death was reported in the Geraldton Advertiser (WA : 1893 - 1905) Fri 19 Mar 1897 Page 3 [3]
DEATH OF MRS. J. E. TOWNSHEND.
Very widespread regret will be felt in this district when the intelligence of the untimely death of a lady, who was well known and respected in this portion of the colony, reaches the public. We refer to Mrs. J. E. Townshend, a lady who was universally esteemed and who succumbed to the dread disease of typhoid fever in the Victoria Hospital, early on Thursday morning last.
Mrs. Townshend was a native of Geraldton—having been born here 38 years ago—and was the second daughter of Mrs. Carson, of this town. About a fortnight ago she took ill of typhoid, and, despite all care and attention, never made any appreciable improvement, but gradually became worse, eventually passing away quietly on the day stated.
Mrs. Townshend leaves behind, besides her husband and mother, five children, as well as many relatives among whom are Mrs. D. Hepburn, :Mrs. A. Meadowcroft, and Mrs. J. Vincent, sisters of the deceased. She resided at Carnarvon for some years and has also been engaged in business on the Murchison goldfields.
The funeral, which was well attended, took place on Thursday afternoon, the remains being interred in the R.C. Cemetery, Father Stronge officiating at the grave. Messrs. C. Conway, J. Cream, J. Stokes, and O. Trigg were the pall-bearers.
Our sincere sympathy is with the bereaved husband and relatives of the deceased.
She was buried at Geraldton Cemetery and Crematorium, Utakarra, Greater Geraldton City, Western Australia (plot: Roman Catholic - Row 21 - Plot #0005) [4]
Note: Rebecca was buried at the old Geraldton Cemetery (now APEX Park Pioneer Cemetery). In 1948, the headstone was removed and placed in the Utakarra Cemetery. At this time, it is unclear if Rebecca is still buried at the APEX Park Pioneer cemetery or was exhumed and moved to the Utakarra cemetery.
