Biography

"The Pedigree of John Boyse" is covered in an article by John Insley Coddingtion in The American Genealogist Vol 19 p 138,<ref name=TAG19>Coddington, John Insley. “The Mother in Law of the Reverend Peter Prudden with a Pedigree of the Boyse Family” The American Genalogist 19:138 (1942-43)</ref> based on some earlier research done by S. Allyn Peck The American Genealogist Vol 16. p. 11<ref name=TAG16 >Peck, S. Allyn. "Rev. Peter Prudden, Pastor and Founder of Milford, Connecticut, and his English Ancestry." The American Genealogist. New Haven, CT: D.L. Jacobus, 1937-. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2009 - .) Vol. 16:11</ref>
As an estimate he was born about 1569, probably near Great Edston, co.York, England.<ref name=TAG19 /> We know from assorted family wills that the Rev. Boyse owned land in Great Edston, which remained in the family for several generations. This leads one to believe that he came from near Edston.

NO parents were listed in Coddington's article. ? Christening: Date: 10 DEC 1575 Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Citation Needed Parents: Citation Needed There were several persons by the name of John Boyse who were at Cambridge in the correct timeframe. Most can be eliminated but one "BOYSE, JOHN. Matriculated sizar from St. John's, Michelmas, 1585; B. A. 1589-90; M.A. 1593,"<ref>Venn, J. A. (John Archibald). Alumni cantabrigienses; a biographical list of all known students, graduates and holders of office at the University of Cambridge, from the earliest times to 1900. Cambridge: University Press, 1924. p. 195</ref> fits fairly well. It is important to note that Coddington, does not make this apositive statement but a probability.<ref name=TAG19 /> He was for some years a preacher in Kent, but was banished from Kent, due to nonconformity. At which point he became a lecturer at the Parish Church of Halifax.<ref name=TAG19 /> This comes from a paper presented to the Halifax Antiquarian Society in 1907:

“It’s said this Exercise was maintained in Dr. Favour’s days, who was a great friend to non-conformists, [and who] maintained two famous men as lecturers at Halifax, whom he shrouded under his authority and interest with the bishop, namely, Mr. Boys, banished out of Kent for his non-conformity, a choice man, very laborious in the work of the Lord, [who] catechised all the poor, expounded to them in the church one day in the week, gave them money; ...” <ref name=HA1907>Papers, Reports, &c., Read Before the Halifax Antiquarian Society, 1907. Halifax: 1907 p. 215.</ref>

The exercise referred to was held once a month (a Wednesday) having two lectures given by guest lecturers. It is fairly obvious, that he was married to Joanna Stowe. And they had children in the estimated range of 1596-1618. Joane Boyse proved hiswill, and Joane Boyes, widow, made a will, in 1630. John Boyse namedJohn Stowe his brother.<ref name=TAG19 /> But another paper (1908) bythe Halifax Antiquarian Society says "The earliest mention of John Bois (or Boyes), referred to above, is the record of his marriage to Anne Waterhouse on 20th Aug 1611."<ref name=HA1908>Papers, Reports, &c., Read Before the Halifax Antiquarian Society, 1907. Halifax: 1908 [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924112378744;view=1up;.... 364]</ref> Certainly, both Coddington and Peck knew about the statement, and both chose to ignore it as incorrect.

His epitaph reads:<center>John Boyes. Abiit non obiit. Anno Dom: 1620, April 30th.
