PARALYSIS FATAL TO CIVIL WAR VETERAN, 84
Christian Church Minister and Retired Farmer Came Here More Than 40 Years Ago.
The Rev. J.W. Trowbridge, a lovable Carthage citizen and probably most prominently known as an active worker in Stanton Post, G.A.R., which he served as chaplain for approximately the last 12 years, died at 3:15 o'clock this morning. The end came at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.E. Reno, 1017 South McGregor Street, and followed a 10 days' illness. He was stricken with paralysis.
Mr. Trowbridge was 84 years old. He was ordained as a mininster in the Christian church when a young man and served in that profession at times throughout his life but never held a regular pastorate except for one brief occasion. He was an elder in the Christian church here a number of years. His gainful life's occupation was that of a farmer. For a quarter of a century he lived on a farm just southwest of this city, retiring and moving to Carthage some 15 years ago.
Born in Owen county, Kentucky, October 21, 1843. Mr. Trowbridge later moved to Indiana and as a young man enlisted in the 148th Indiana Volunteers, serving with Company A of that unit, in the closing year of the civil struggle. He was a fifer.
May 4, 1871 Mr. Trowbridge and Miss Martha Goodpasture were married at Anderson, Indiana. In 1884 they moved to Jasper county, locating near Carthage. This has been their home since. Mrs. Trowbridge and two children, both of this city, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive, also two sisters; Mrs. America Slyder of Indianapolis, Indiana and Mrs. S. J. Best of Gulfport, Mississippi.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church The Rev. C. A. Earsom officiated assisted by the Rev. Ben Edwards The G.A.R. conducted services at the graveside.

148th Regiment, Indiana Infantry
Organized at Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in February 25, 1865. Left State for Nashville, Tenn., February 28. Duty there and as guard and garrison in District of Middle Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to September. Mustered out September 5, 1865.
Lost during service 2 Enlisted men killed and 34 Enlisted men by disease. Total 36.
