Peter Gates born 02/28/1807 in Ross County Ohio. He married Elizabeth Frank daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Frank born in Canfield, Trumboll County, Ohio October 7, 1821 they were married on August 27, 1840.

In 1865 they migrated two miles west of West Liberty, Iowa. Later his brothers John and George also moved to Iowa and located near West Liberty.

Peter Gates was a circuit rider, kept a daily diary and read and reread the bible and in his diaries referred to the completing of the reading of the entire bible for the 68th time. (per Elizabeth Frank Gates obituary their circuit was 300 miles and contained 35 preaching places.) In the diaries it tells of conducting services at the North Bend Church (which still stood in 1956) near North Liberty. Peter and Elizabeth had 11 children.

In 1701 William Penn spent some time in Germany, lecturing and preaching, and during this time he extended an invitation to the Getz family to come to his newly founded colony of Pennsylvania. We do not, however, have the names of the members of the Getz family that came over the U. S. at that time, but the following information that we do have: On Leonard’s will 1801-mention is made of a son John (Eldest son-Brother to Adam & it was Johns duty to pay his mother a yearly sum form his inheritance as it seemed in those days the inheritance went to the oldest son and it was up to him to keep the family provided for. Margaret Barnhart-Union County Pennsylvania. Parents of 11 children: Leonard "Peter" John George Sally Gates Barnhardt Margaret Gates Brown Catherine Gates seemed to be a favorite sister of Peter Gates for he referred to her many times in his diary. Anna Gates Furgeson (In Indiana) m. David Furgeson Died May 1846 from tree falling on her. Elizabeth Gates Rush m. Abe Rush no family Molly Gates Mary Gates Kreigbaum m.
