Lucy Downing was born in Suffolk Co., England c1625, daughter of Emmanuel Downing and his second wife Lucy Winthrop. Her family came to New England, settling at Salem, Massachusetts in 1638, [1] on the ship Thomas and Frances. [2]
Lucy married William Norton of Ipswich, Massachusetts c1649. [1] According to Anderson her husband's origin are unknown. [3]
Her husband William wrote his will on April 28, 1694/5, in it he left bequests to: [4]
- eldest son John Norton, 10s , having given him his portion already
- my daughter Elizabeth 'Wanrite', L80, to be paid in L20 increments over 4 years
- my son Bonus Norton, to be sole executor - 20s and all my dwelling house and lands, my household goods and my flock of cattle
- my wife Lucy - all her care and maintenance by son Bonus [4]
He died at Ipswich a few days later, on April. 30, 1694/5. [5]
Widow Lucy Norton died at Ipswich on February 5, 1697/8. [1] [5]

Conflicting origins
[Husband William Norton. TAG: 16: 1939: p. 111 states William's parents were William Norton and Alice Bownest, however Anderson indicates his origins are unknown. GM:V:2007: p. 280-2]
Source for parents, spouse, etc TAG 15:202; TAG 15:197-207; TAG 16:111 "Letter from Lucy Downing [mother] to John Winthrop Jr. dated 17 Dec 1648: "My daughter Lucie was a little geinge to be maryed to Mr. Eyers sonne, Thomas I meane, but ... nowe wee are apon an earnest motion with Mr. William Norton". [footnote: William Norton came to New England 1635 being about 25, and married, probably not long after this letter, Lucy, d/o Emanuel and Lucy Downing. William is explicitly names as "my sonn Norton" in a letter dated 23 Feb 1658/9 (ibid. p. 49).]" [1]
