THE JOHN AVERY LINE

John, the eldest son of John Avery and Ruth Little was born on 24 August 1711 at Truro, Massachusetts. His baptism on 11 November 1711 was one of the first ones at First Church, where his father was the first settled Minister. John is a Mayflower descendant through Richard Warren.

Rev. John Avery, I graduated from Harvard College, whose son John Avery II (Jr.) graduated from Harvard College in 1731, whose son John Avery graduated from Harvard College, and so on, until six (6) generations of Avery men named John had graduated from Harvard. This is known as "the John Avery Harvard College line." John's occupation was 'merchant' in Boston, Massachusetts.

John was married twice. He married 1) Mary Deming, the daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Green) Deming on 13 June 1734 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

They had six children born at Boston:

  • Mary Avery (b. 13 April 1735; d. 1789), m. first on 12 November 1754 at Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Peaslee Collins (1728-1755) and then married Rhode Island Governor John Collins.
  • Ruth Avery (b. 26 October 1737), m. Ezekiel Price (1727-1802)
  • John Avery, II (b. 2 September 1739; 7 June 1806), m. 23 March 1769 at Boston, Massachusetts, Mary 'Polly' Cushing (1748-1823)
  • Hannah Avery (b. 10 May 1742), m. 2 October 1764 at Boston, Massachusetts, Joseph Jackson
  • Unnamed Avery (b. 6 December 1743; d. 6 December 1743)
  • Samuel Avery (b. 1 December 1746; d. 4 August 1751),

Mary (Deming) Avery died on 2 December 1763 at Boston, Massachusetts

John married 2) Sarah Bridge on 13 June 1765 at Boston. There are no known children from this union. Sarah died on 7 March 1788 at Boston.

John Avery II died on 31 March 1796 in his 85th year at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Reverend John Avery was born 4 February 1686 in Dedham, Massachusetts Bay Colony; baptized 27 April 1686 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His will was written on 18 January 1754 in Truro, Massachusetts and he died there on 23 April 1754. He's buried in the Old North Cemetery in Truro, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.

John was known as a pastor, doctor, lawyer, smith and farmer. With his busy life, he had little time for speculative philosophy or other outside interest.
