About Reverend William Bliss
A Patriot of the American Revolution for RHODE ISLAND. DAR Ancestor # A011327
- Rev William Bliss Find A Grave Memorial# 21780096
- Bliss Lot, Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island, USA
William Bliss joined the Sabbatarian Church in 1764, was licensed to preach in 1773, was ordained on Dec. 7, 1779 in Hopkinton and became pastor of the Sabbatarian Church in Newport on Christmas Day 1780. He served until his death in 1808.
The son of Josiah Bliss and Sarah Collins of Middletown, he was married to Barbara Phillips (1727-75) and they had a large number of children. After she died he married Elizabeth Ward (1735-1815).
The exact location of his grave is uncertain. Whether the Sabbatarian Church ever had a cemetery is in doubt. He may have been buried in a family lot in Middletown, but all traces of such a lot have vanished. Wherever he is his gravestone has been against the side of the Newport Historical Society for some years now. The Historical Society building was previously the Sabbatarian Church where he conducted his services over 200 years ago.
