Because the courthouse containing records for William was burned in the Civil War, finding the ancestry of William has been undetermined, even though many attempts have been made.
It seems probable that Rev. William Henry Hawkins was in Washington County, Pennsylvania and involved with the Methodist church (Hockins Church) there. A brief history of the Hawkins Church is given as follows: In 1870 William H Hawkins Sr. b 1749, his brother Thomas b 1745, and their families came from Harford County, Maryland. Their grandfather was Robert Hawkins Sr. b 1691 and their father was Robert Hawkins b 1717 from Baltimore, Maryland. Their home in Maryland was a preaching point on the Baltimore Circuit in 1777. The Hawkins family settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania on land purchased from a Mr. White and their home became a preaching point for the group professing Methodism.
In the fall of 1783 Francis Asbury, John Wesley’s assistant who came to America in the fall of 1771, sent Richard Owings, a preacher, to set up what became the Redstone Circuit.
The next spring (1784) regular preachers were appointed to the Redstone Circuit. In this circuit there were ten preaching points all in private homes.
One of these preaching pints was four miles west of Brownsville at Hawkins’ (spelled in old records “Hockins”). A log church was built there in about 1786. In 1790, a William Taylor bought the Hawkins farm where the log church stood. Since then it has been known as the Taylor Church.
Rev. William Henry Hawkins lived in this same area and possibly married the daughter of Mr. White, Cassandra White. Some think he married Cassandra Roberts, daughter of Roger Roberts, but Raymond Martin Bell “Early Methodist Circuits on the Upper Ohio” said that Roger Roberts was the father-in-law of William H Hawkins Sr. Cassandra died in 1802 and Rev. William Henry Hawkins remarried and eventually moved to Marion County, West Virginia.
It has been stated by some that the father of Rev. William Henry Hawkins was he founder of the Hawkins Church. DNA will surely be a critical key in unlocking the mystery of the ancestry of Rev. William Henry Hawkins.
