Aaron Hawkins was elected from Marion co. to serve in the First West Virginia Legislature The first session being June 20, 1863 at Wheeling West Virginia. Senator Hawkins was placed on several committees, the most notable being that of Banks and Corporations.

1799 Aaron Hawkins 1876Born in Bedforn co. PA., sixth child of Rev. Wm. and Cassandra Hawkins. Resided on Indian Creek, West Agusta co., Virginia (now near Hagens, Monongalia co., West Virginia. Married Ann Catherine Dicken 1820, traveling from Hagens to their newly acquired Grant of Land on PawPaw Creek, on horseback, he in the saddle and she on the same horse a distance of fifteen miles. A second horse carried their belongings; clothing, bedding cooking utensils and tools for land clearing and gardening. They erected their first log house on high ground one mile west of PawPaw Creek on a corn patch planted by the Indians a few seasons prior. Aaron cleared the land for general farming and grazing and produced an abundance of forage for cattle, hogs and sheep which he marketed in Wheeling and Pittsburg.
Aaron Hawkins secured many acres of land by direct purchase and by securing ownership through Land Grant Rights from persons who did not wish to homestead their claims. These are recorded in the Deed books of Monongalia co., Virginia, and Marion co. VA. from 1837-1850, there are many. He was one of the highest taxpayers in Marion co., VA.
Aaron Hawkins was elected from Marion co. to serve in the First West Virginia Legislature The first session being June 20, 1863 at Wheeling West Virginia. Senator Hawkins was placed on several committees, the most notable being that of Banks and Corporations. On july 7th, 1863, he offered the following resolution: Resolved, That the committee on Courts of Justice and General Laws inquire into the expediency of making the crime of horse stealing punishable by death or some other Severe penalty; and report by bill or otherwise.
