About Rhoda Campbell

Rhoda was the daughter of John Chittum and Nancy Sly Chittum. She was born ca. 1794 in Virginia. On 19 July 1817, Rhoda Chittum married Ambrose Campbell, Jr. in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Ambrose, Rhoda, and their family moved in a covered wagon to Franklin County, West Jefferson village, Ohio in 1823 or 1824. In Ohio, Ambrose used two horses to put in the crop and had a good crop.

However, Rhoda died in 1826 with her newborn child after the first year. Ambrose was left with 8 children to raise. Two years later, Ambrose contracted malaria and died, leaving the children orphans. The children were taken in by a woman they called Mama Strader who looked after them until they were self-sufficient.

Their children were: Rhoda, Elsie, Frances "Fannie", George, Catherine, Sarah and an unnamed child who most likely died at birth.
