Richard Baldwin was born on 3 June 1576 in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.3,2 He was the son of Richard Baldwin and Isabel Chase.2 Richard Baldwin married Isabel Harding, daughter of Richard Harding, on 31 May 1598 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England.4 Richard Baldwin died on 2 November 1632 in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, at age 56.4

Richard Baldwin left a will on 23 May 1630. The will mentions sons Joseph, Nathaniel, Timothy (eldest and executor) and daughters Mary, Hannah, Christian and Sarah.3 His will was proved/probated on 16 May 1633 in Court of the Archdeaconry, Buckinghamshire, England.3

:"This was a prominent family and Robert Baldwin apparently owned a lease of the manor at Dundridge. This lease was inherited in 1537 by Richard(1) whose son, Henry, purchased the manor outright in 1577/78. Although not necessarily in a direct line, direct and collateral ancestors of our Baldwin lineage can be found in Chesham dating back to the middle of the thirteenth century (circa 1250)". : In 1639, six years after their father's death, we find the three sons, Timothy, Joseph, and Nathaniel, in New Haven and Milford CT. Their close association in both New Haven and Milford with the family of Sylvester Baldwin, who descends from Richard adds credibility to their ancestry. Biography

Richard Baldwin, of Cholesbury; weaver, made his will dated December 23, 1630; proved May 16 1633 in the Court of the Archdeaconry of Bucks.In it he mentions his wife Isabel, and his children, Nathaniel, Joseph, Mary Pratt, Hannah, Christian, Sarah, and Timothy "my eldest son".. According to Charles C. Baldwin, he is the father of no less than four of the first settlers of New England.<ref>Baldwin Genealogy Supplement, pg 990</ref> Abstract of Will of Richard Baldwin of Cholsbury, weaver: :To Isabel my wife one third of my good & chattels - to Nathaniel myson £10 - to Joseph my son half an acre of land called Hunt's Wick, when 21 - to my daughter Mary Pratt 6s, 8d, & to her daughter Mary 2 sheep, & to her other 2 children each a sheep - to my daughter Hannah £13 6, 8, & my 2 other daughters Christian and Sarah each £10., when 21 or married - all residue to Timothy my eldest son, and he to be my executor.<ref name="Chest">Chester, Joseph Lemuel Investigationsconcerning the family of Baldwin, of Aston Clinton. Boston: Privately printed 1884, accessed online 3/25/14</ref> There has been confusion with the order of Richard Baldwins descending from Richard Baldwin of Dundridge. There is little information available on Richard Baldwin. son of Richard Baldwin of Dundridge who inherited the Cholsbury lands in 1552-3, and more information on Richard Baldwin of Cholsbury, grandson of Richard Baldwin of Dundridge. Richard in not mentioned in his mothers will in 1565/6, and most likely predeceded her in death. Joseph Chester suggests Richard Baldwin is the son of Richard who is mentioned in the will in 1552-3, who inherits the Cholsbury lands, and grandson of the Richard who died in 1552-3; "Although this Richard evidently could not have been the one who had the Cholsbury Lands in 1552-3, unless he had these children in his extreme old age, yet it seems not unlikely that he was his son .<ref>Pgs 9 & 10, Investigations concerning the family of Baldwin, of Aston Clinton, Bucks</ref>

Disputed Parents

It has been supposed that Richard Baldwin was the son of Thomas Baldwin and Joan Tyndall. However, it has also been supposed that Richard was the son of Richard Baldwin and IsabelChase.<ref>See [http://genforum.genealogy.com/baldwin/messages/6931.html this genforum post.</ref> However, there seems to be no evidence for this, and it appears that Chase was the name of the former husband of Richard's WIFE Isabel. :The Baldwin family is known as far back in England as 672. The Baldwins of New England came largely from County Bucks, England. Richard's presumed grandfather Richard is buried in the Churchyard at Austin Clinton, County Bucks, England. Richard in not mentioned in his mothers will in 1565/6. "Very littleinformation can be ascertained on this Richard". Joseph Chester states that "although this Richard evidently could not have been the one who had the Cholsbury lands in 1552-3, unless he had these children (those named in his will) in his extreme old age, yet it seems not unlikely that he was his son".
