About Richard Burnett

Birth: Jan. 16, 1805 Fordwich, England Death: Jul. 23, 1883 Nelson, New Zealand

Richard was born in Borden, Sittingbourne, Kent to Richard and Ann (nee SImmonds) Burnett.

He married in 1834 when he was 29, to Ann Driver. They had 2 children. Don't know what happened to Ann but in 1838 he married Sarah Ann Ironmonger in England - he was then 33 and she was 18. They had 12 children, all in Nelson, Marlborough, New Zealand.

Richard emigrated from England to New Zealand on the WHITBY, sailing from Gravesend on the 2nd May 1841, arriving in Welington on the 27th September 1841 and then onto Nelson on the 5th of November.

There were no women on board (his wife and children arriving 5 months later).

It was one of 3 vessels - the "WHITBY", the "WILL WATCH" and the "ARROW" (which did not depart until 21st May) - which were fitted out to carry out a survey for the new settlement in Nelson. The Whitby and the Will Watch departed Gravesend on a Sunday afternoon after a service on board Will Watch and as they moved down the Thames the event was marked by a 21 gun salute.

Even though the Arrow left a month later it arrived into Wellington ahead of the other two. All three ships arrived in Wellington until the site of Nelson had been decided. The Whitby brought to New Zealand, Captain Arthur Wakefield RN, brother to Edward Gibbon Wakefield, along with 59 other officials and labourers.

Richard was 30 at the time and was a gardener and agricultural labourer. His second wife Sarah Ann and his 2 children from his first wife Ann Driver, George and Harriett sailed for New Zealand on the LLOYD which left The Downs on September 11th 1841 and arrived in Nelson on 9th February 1842.

George, who was 5 (mother Ann), died 2 months into the voyage. A baby was born at sea to Richard and Sarah, but died the following month - while still at sea.

He died aged 78 in Dovedale - 50km south of Nelson, 21 years before Sarah.
