About Richard Howell

Per Leslie Glazer-Jacobs, This Richard Howell who came to Southold, NY in 1640 is NOT the son of Edward Howell from Southampton(Marsh Gibbon) This Richard Howell's father's name is John. This Richard Howell and Edward Howell do NOT share the same haplogroup. They are NOT son and father.

First Generation:

1. Richard Howell, the progenitor of the Howell family which arose in the New World, on the North Fork of eastern Long Island, is first mentioned historically in the Southold Town Records, in a deed dated 26 April 1675, by which "... William Halleke.. for divers considerations me hereunto moving.. doe hereby give grant and confirm unto my son in law Richard Howell of Southold, 20 roods wide of land from North to South Sea, lying and being next unto ye lands of William Halliock, on ye east side and John Conklin Jun. on ye west side - and ye said Richard Howell doth oblidge himself unto the said William Hallock that what land he shall from time to time take in from ye comon, he shall sett up and maintaine a sufficient fence and shall not lett said land to any person but shall be approved by ye neighborhood and in case said Richard Howell die without issue, then ye said land to fall to John Hallocke, he paying for the housing and fencing." [6]

Elizabeth Hallock, the daughter of William Hallock, is said to have been the first wife of Richard Howell [7]. While this may be true, it cannot be accepted as proven since it appears to have been derived from the wording, "son-in-law", in the deed cited above, the will of Richard Howell, naming his wife, Elizabeth, and the record of her death. As will be seen, these two points refer to his last wife, Elizabeth, who may have been the former wife of John Harrud, who could not have been the wife of Richard Howell in 1675, since John Harrud died on 24 Nov. 1684 [8], or an unidentified third wife [9].

In the Southold Estimate of 16 Sep. 1675, Richard Howell was listed as possessing -

  • 1 heade 6 acors land - 24 pounds
  • 2 oxen 1 cow - 17 pounds
  • 1:3 year old - 4 pounds
  • 2:2 year 2 yerlings - 8 pounds
  • 1 horse 1 yrling - 15 pounds
  • 5 gotes 7 swine - 9 pounds
    • Total - 77 pounds

Richard Howell died on 9 Nov. 1709 [46].

Elizabeth (Cooke) Harrud Howell may have died on 4 March 1724/5 at the age of 70 (sic) [47].

Richard Howell and his first wife were probably the parents of six children:

  • 2. i. John Howell, born on 24 May 1670 [48].
  • 3. ii. Hannah Howell
  • 4. iii. David Howell, born in about Nov. 1676.
  • 5. iv. Jonathan Howell
  • 6. v. Richard Howell, born in about 1684.

Richard and Elizabeth (Cooke) Harrud Howell may have been the parents of three children:

  • 7. vi. Isaac Howell.
  • 8. vii. Jacob Howell.
  • 9. viii. Dorothy Howell.

Richard Howell may also have been the father of two other children:

  • 10. ix. Ruth Howell, listed with the household of William Hallock in the Census of 1698. Possibly a sister of Richard Howell.
  • 11. x. Elizabeth Howell, listed by Moore [49] and Craven [50], as a daughter of Richard Howell, since an "Eliza Howell" was listed with the household of Richard Howell in the Census of 1698 in a position usually given to a child, but who may have been his wife, Elizabeth. If this "Eliza Howell" was a child, of whom no more is known, and not his wife, then this would imply that he married a third time to another woman named Elizabeth.

End of First Generation.

A prior version of this profile reported Richard Howell baptized 1629 died 1709, referencing the will of Richard Howell of Southold. This date and these references were removed in 2021.

Division of children. Narrative reports that "most" of Richard'schildren were born to his first wife, Elizabeth Halsey, but this is not a satisfactory solution, especially as her baptism in 1635 is now known (published 1950_. As one WikiTree-er wrote, " If Daniel is the son of Elizabeth Halsey, then she would have been about 45 years old when she bore him."
Not the father of John Howell of Southold. A previous version ofthis profile linked as a son, John Howell, reported born at Southold, 24 January 1668. No such son, John, is reported in the child lists by Howell (1887) or Seversmith (1947) and apparently confused this profile, Richard Howell of Southampton, as the early man, Richard Howell of Southold. John's association as a son was severed in 2021.
