About Richard R Jarrett

Richard Jarrett 1620 is the son of William Jarrett who sailed with Capt. John Smith and was one of the first settlers of Jamestown, Virginia Colony, in 1607.

Last Will and Testament of Richard Jarratt; Written: 13 July 1672; Proved: As the date is written: 07 January 1672; It must be 1673 since he wrote the will in July 1672. Richard signed his name as Richard Jarratt, using his mark as an "R with a cross at the bottom of the R" He sealed it with red wax. Deed Book 1, 1652 - 1672, Surry County, Virginia.

Richard mentions wife, Margery. He only mentions son Charles and gives him all his land; housing; his horse, a Bay mare, six year old in November; Cows. He asks that Charles be taught well in reading and writing. He gives to daughter Elizabeth for her dowry, cows, goats. If his son Charles dies, he states to sell, and divide between his brothers in England--one of whom appears to be a Robert.

Richard and family are buried at Lawnes Creek Parish Church Cemetery in Surry Co, VA.

Children:

  • 1. Elizabeth Jarrett is the daughter of Richard Jarrett of Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry County, Virginia and Margery Bellingham Jarrett Chambers. Elizabeth Jarrett married William Gray, son of Thomas "Ancient Planter."
  • 2. Charles Jarrett died in 1719, Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry County, Virginia. Charles is the son of Richard Jarrett of Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry County, Virginia and Margery Bellingham Jarrett Chambers. Charles Jarrett married first, Sarah Hardy, daughter of George Hardy; Second marriage, Mary Peters Hardy Jarrett, daughter of Moses Peters, Widow of Thomas Hardy. In 1687, Charles Jarrett served in the Virginia "For Horse" Militia, along with his brother Thomas and William Gray.
  • 3. Thomas Jarrett died in 1719, leaving a wife, two sons and an unborn child. It is possible that Thomas' death date is incorrect, since (1.) he is not included in his father's will, and (2) it is the same as his brother Charles'. It is also possible that the Horse Militia date is incorrect, for Thomas (b. 1643) and Charles (b. c. 1640/41) would have been in their mid to late 40s. Also, Thomas died before the birth of his 3rd child.
