About Robert Armstrong
Of Ballyan, King's Co. - Betham's abstracts (National Library of Ireland GO MS 261).
The Armstrong family tree is difficult. What has been followed is Burke's 'Genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the peerage and baronetage of the British Empire' (1845). This gives Robert's marriage date as 1637, but this date is out of kilter with all other known dates. Major Stoney's 'Some older annals of the Stoney family' refers to General John Armstrong as an uncle of Mary Stoney née Armstrong, and General Bigoe Armstrong as a cousin. Following Burke they were a first cousin and a first cousin once removed. But Betham conflates two Andrew Armstrongs, making General John a nephew and General Bigoe a first cousin twice removed, which seems less credible.
John Armstrong, 'The Pedigree of the family of Armstrong', continued by the Rev. W. A. Armstrong (no imprint, 1813) gives Robert's marriage date as 1673, and says he died on 23 May 1716 aged 65.
