“In reviewing what little we can learn of the life of Robert Booth from the fragmentary records, and taking into account the political situation as it existed for some years after we first learn of him in this country, it seems to the writer that there is a strong probability that he was a friend of Sir Ferdinando Gorges and was persuaded by him to come over in the carrying out of his plans as has already been outlined. Gorges, as we have seen, was Lord Proprietor of Maine, with all the power that the title implies, and Robert Booth's prominence in Maine history can only be explained by the supposition that he was a person of assured social position in the mother country. There is good reason for belief that he was a descendant of an armigerous family, “a gentleman well bred and of good name.”
Donald Lines Jacobus (paraphrased):
Robert was we think born at Devon, England. He married second before July 21 1650 Debora Unknown, who died in 1683, she married second by contract Feb 21 1681 to Thomas Ladbrook of Portsmouth, NH . Tradition says that "Three Brothers" , Richard Booth of Straford CT, Robert Booth of ME, and John Booth of Southhold, Long Island, NY all came to New England at the same time. Robert was first at Exeter, NH and was a land measure there in 1644. He then moved to Wellss, Cape Porpus, and then to Saco, Maine, where in 1654 he was on a commission to build the new prison for Saco and York. In 1655 he was commissioner to assessing the towns. He survived on Juries 1647-65. In 1659 he was chosen as the first rep. to the General Court in Boston, MA and in 1661 he was coroner and Town Clerk[1]
William Richard Cutter:
“Robert Booth, of Exeter, 1645, moved to Saco, Maine, in 1653, or earlier, and took a prominent part in the affairs of that town. He was representative from 1659 to 1670. Ridlon in his "Saco Valley Settlements and Families" says : "At this day the Court had the control of ecclesiastical affairs, and when, in 1643, the town was found to be destitute of a minister, the commissioners ordered while at court in Wells, that Robert Booth, a citizen of some education, 'have liberty to exercise his gifts for the edification of the people.' Assisted financially by an annual appropriation voted by the town, and voluntary contributions, he 'held forth' as a preacher for some years. Those he could not edify he probably mortified." Robert Booth died in 1672, aged sixty-eight. The probate of his will without date, made four days before he died, was made March 10, 1673, but the inventory was taken October 26 preceding. Robert Booth was married twice. The name of the first wife is not known. His second wife, Deborah, survived him. His children were: Mary, Ellen (or Elinor), Simeon (Simon), Martha, Robert, Mary, born September 30, 1627, married Walter Penewell; Ellen, born February, 1634, married Nicholas Bully”[2]
James Savage:
