Robert Francis, of Wethersfield

"b. 1629, probaby in England; m. Joan --, about 1650, who d. Jan. 29, 1705, aged 76.

His name appeared on the Wethersfield records as having been made freeman in 1645. He is also recorded as having purchased land from John Latimer, March 29, 1652. It is supposed that he migrated from the Massachusetts Colony to settle in Wethersfield. The name of Richard Francis appears on the records of Cambridge, Mass., as having settled there in 1636, and who had previously resided at Dorchester, Mass.

This Richard was referred to in a diary of Judge Sewell published by the Massachusetts Historical Society as "an ancient and good man indeed." This Richard was born in the year 1616 in England, and married Alice Wilcox in 1644. He is supposed to have been related to Robert,--either cousin or uncle, and perhaps came to America at same time.

Robert Francis established a farm at Wethersfield and became a prominent member of the first Congregational Church of that place."

He is found in the records at Wethersfield in 1651, the first person who settled there with the last name of "Francis".[12]

In March 1651/522 he had land there. He was made a freeman in 1669, a fence viewer 1671-2 and a surveyor of highways in 1675. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Reverend Mix's congregation.[13] He was listed as a church member 1694 and died 2 January 1711/2 age 83, page 2.[14]

Robert Francis married Joan Sibberance in 1650 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.
