History of Hampton : "Robert Moulton, Scratby. Son of Thomas. Yeoman. He married 15 May 1595 at Hemsby Mary Smith. She may have been the Mary, daughter of John Smith who was baptised 22 Mar. 1579 at Caister-by-sea. But with so many Smith families we can't be sure. Robert Moulton's will 8 Oct. 1633 and was proved 22 Nov. following at Norwich. He was buried 11 Oct. 1633 at Hemsby. Do not merge Robert Moulton the Ship Builder of Salem with this Robert Moulton of Ormsby. Robert Moulton the Ship Builder died in 1665 and listed a different family in his will. According to A History of the Moulton Family: “Robert Moulton was sent over in the fleet with Higginson to Salem in 1629…with orders to commence ship building…He soon removed to Charleston where he was made freeman in 1631…He came back to Salem in 1637…Moulton did a large business, not only in ship carpentering, but also in exporting ship timber…He was the first deacon of the first church in Salem. He died in in Wenham in 1665. In his will…he mentioned his son Robert, daughter Dorothy Edwards and grandson Robert Buffum.”[7]

Robert Moulton, son of Thomas Moulton and Joan Green, was born circa 1565 at Ormesby, Norfolk, England. Evidence of Robert's birth year and location is found in the following deposition made by him in 1606:
Listed as a husbandman, he stated at that time he was 41 years old, that he had lived in Scratby for approximately ten years and prior to that in Ormesby where he was born.[1]
Robert married Mary Smith on 15 May 1595 at Hemsby, Norfolk, England.[1][2][3]
"In an indenture dated 12 January 1596/7, Sir Edward Clere, Knight and lord of the manor of Ormesby, leased to Robert Moulton of Scratby, husbandman, twenty-two pieces of land for twenty-five years...A description of each piece indicates that most of the land was in Scratby, with two pieces in Caister. None was listed in Ormesby." This amounted to approximately fifty-four acres of land.[1]
Children
Since Robert leased land at Scratby beginning 12 January 1596/97 and remained there until his death, all his children (except the oldest, Samuel) were likely born in Scratby. According to Myrtle Stevens Hyde: "Scratby parish had no registers of its own at this period, but was considered part of Ormsby Saint Margaret, Robert's home parish. The christenings of Robert and Mary's children that survived in the records are for Bridget in 1601, twins Mary and Thomas in 1608, and Elizabeth in 1610."
All the children (except Samuel and Bridget) are mentioned in their father's will.
