biography

Yes, Robert Paddock (1584-1650) is my 10x great grandfather. I'm descended from him through his son Zachariah, grandson Zachariah, great-grandson Ichabod, 2x great grandson Thomas, 3x great granddaughter Jane Lucas. This is the info I have on him:

Robert Paddock was born 1583/4 according to America records. He is recorded as being born in Stephenstown, Balrothery Parish, County Dublin, Ireland, younger son of John Paddock, blacksmith of Stephenstown and later of Tullygovan near Killany, Barony of Ardee, County Louth, Ireland by his wife Jane Jennings.

Robert died intestate at Plymouth, July 25, 1650 according to Plymouth Colony Records. Though he made no will, his widow Mary cofirmed in November 1650 that on his death bed Robert had granted the guardianship of his son John to Captain Thomas Willet, who was later Mayor of New York. "Whereas Robert Padduk of Plym: lately decease did on his death bed give and dispose his sonne John Paddock aged about (F)give years unto Captaine Tho: Willet to bee att his desposing and under his guidance as his won child: These presents doe therefore wittness that Mary Padduck the wife of said Robert Padduck doth condesend unto and allow of the said acte of her Said husband in the disposing of her Said sonne John to Captain Willet as aforesaid In Witness of the promises shee the Said Mary hath hereunto sett her hand and given way to have this present said writing entered upon publick Record." Mary Paddock then signed this by making her mark (an M).

The name of the ship and the year of his emigration remain unknown. He may well have been in Plymouth by 1632, there having been two of his children entered in the Plymouth Colony Records born before 1636. In Plymouth Colony, Robert was a blacksmith and at one time a constable. Robert Paddock was the Patriarch of the Paddock family in America.

Robert Paddock was one of the pilgrim Fathers, he was one of the early settlers of Plymouth, and was a smith by trade. He had a son, Zachariah, born in 1636. Robert Paddock was probably a relative of Captain Leonard Peddock who was master of one of the ships that came to Plymouth in 1622, it being frequently the case in those times that names were mis-spelled. This is the origin of the name of Peddock's Island at the entrance of Boston Harbor. Branches of this family at the Revolutionary period were to be found in various parts of New England, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Adino Paddock was the son of John and Rebecca (Thatcher) Paddock; was born 14 March 1727, and was baptized in the First Church, Harwich, 31 March, 1728

Irish Huguenot blacksmith Robert PADDOCK, b. ca 1584 in Stephenstown, County Dublin

Robert first married Mary Holmes and second Mary Trine.

"On his deathbed, Robert Paddock placed his youngest son John with Captain Willett [Ply. Col. Deeds, 1:198], his wife Mary [Trine] consenting, and this she confirmed after his death, 19 Nov. 1650

"I'm using the 1968 reprint of the 12 volume set of Plymouth Colony records edited by Shurtleff and usually referred to as PCR. PCR 8:25 (Births, Marriages, and Deaths) lists "some of the Children of Robert Paddocke, deceased."

Those listed are Zachariah, 20 Mar. 1636; Mary, 10 Mar. 1638; Allis, 7 Mar, 1640; John, 1 Apr. 1643. (Remember, these dates would be "old style.")"

______________________________

Robert married Mary Trine Oct 20, 1646 so all the above children are Robert's with Mary Holmes. Mary Holmes was born in Louth, Ireland. Robert's children with Mary Trine Palmer were George and Susannah.

______________________________

There is apparently no conclusive proof that Robert is the son of John Paddock and Jane Jennings; however, both John and Robert were blacksmiths, and Robert's children shared names with those of John's family and descendents.

Died intestate, but a document in November 1650 has widow Mary confirming that son John, age 5, is to go to the guardianship of Capt. Thomas Willet.

After Robert's death, his children were listed in the Plymouth vital records along with his surrogate son (and eventual son-in-law) William Palmer. The mystery about this William Palmer is detailed in an article in the Colonial Genealgist which notes that there were apparently two Williams born to William Palmer, Sr. - one in 1634, the other posthumously in 1638, who claimed his inheritance at age 21 on 29 Apr 1659. Since if the 1634 William were the son of William, Jr. b. 1612, he would have been born only 3 months after the marriage, that seems an unlikely solution for a Puritan community. One possibility is that the father is indeed William, Jr (or I suppose, anyone), by servant Mary Trine (who joined the Palmer household after Sarah Palmer Rowley died). In order to protect his son, William Sr. married the young Mary and arranged with his friend Robert Paddock to care for the child. William's will mentions his young wife and a coming heir. The inventory also shows a debt to goodwife Paddock "for the child". The theory is that the earlier child was officially disowned, but William was providing for his care. To add yet another wrinkle to this story, Mary Trine Palmer then married Robert Paddock!

Mary Paddock then signed this by making her mark (an M). Robert inherited the blacksmith shop of his father in Kallany in the will of his mother made at Killany, May 15, 1607.

Disputed Ancestry

His disputed ancestry is discussed in 'Curfman, Robert Joseph, The Paddock genealogy : descendants of Robert Paddock of Plymouth Colony, blacksmith and constable, 1646, Fort Collins, Colo.: Curfman, 1986 --available in digital format on Ancestry.com, and summarized here:
:"As no clues have been found in the old [Plymouth] colony records, there are several traditions about the origin and the emigration of ROBERT PADDOCK OF PLYMOUTH COLONY, but no evidences have been found to support any of them." Curfman describes how research has failed to support that Robertwas of Welsh or of English extraction, that he was son of a Mayflower sailor Zachariah Paddock, that he came from Weymouth, England in 1630 with the Eddys, or that he was a relative of "Capt. Leonard Peddock, master of one of the ships that came to Plymouth in 1622, after whom Peddock's Island at the entrance of Boston harbor was named." He alsoshows how Robert Paddock could not have been, as claimed by Banks (TDNE), the Robert Banks born in 1605 to Thomas and Agnes (Wilcox) Paddock of High Ham, Somerset, England, because Robert of Plymouth Colony died in 1650 aged "not over 67" (MSPdk)... Curfman points to one promising lineage tying Robert to one born in Ardee, County Louth, Ireland, born 16 September 1584. :::"This connection was researched about 1910 for the late industrialistHiram Lester Paddock (1860-1948)... and was included in his typescript The Paddock Family. However, the originals supporting this link were destroyed during the 1922 Dublin uprising. Paddock's Irish origins are supported by a wooden weaving needle foundin the "Paddock-Wood estate" dated 1588 inscripted with a note that it was brought to the New World from Ireland. Curman bases his acceptance of the Irish origins on this one needle and that Robert's Somerset origins have been disproven. Curfman suggests that this Irish sojourn came through Wales or Somersetshire, contributing to the theory that Robert Paddock originated fromthese places. Curfman, who had access to many family documents including earlier manuscripts citing documents no longer available (including a possibly bogus French manuscript linking to the French surname Padoc or Padoque),goes on to outline a possible pedigree of Robert Paddock. This has been subsequently cited as true, despite Curfman's own admission that itlacks confirmation! Probate evidence (which unfortunately due to document destruction can no longer be verified) supports the tie between Ireland and France. (See Curfman, p 13.) But he later writes (p 15) that "Some of the documents seem almost too good to be true" and that while he has included it all, he says he "tends to accept the following Irish part, though records were destroyed 1922, for the alleged Somerset origin of Robert has been disproved (see page 21).

Biography

He married Ball-1145|Mary Ball in Ireland. After the death of Mary Ball, he married Holmes-1412|Mary Holmes in Ireland. They had seven children.

It is uncertain when he emigrated from Ireland to Plymouth. He was a blacksmith by trade, and at one point a constable of PlymouthColony. After the mother of his children died (about 1643) he married third Mary (

) Palmer, widow of William(1) Palmer, Sr. It appears they had no children. She survived him and married as her third husband, Thomas Roberts. Robert died on July 25, 1650, in Duxbury, Plymouth County. Upon his death, his son John was put into the care of Captain Thomas Willet, eventhough his wife was still living. This suggests that John was his youngest son by his former wife.

from [TAG 32:42-43] :"Robert Paddock was of Plymouth before 20 March 1636, the date of birth of his son Zechariah. He had a garden plot in Plymouth at this time, but in 1639-40 he was taxed as of Duxbury. He returned to Plymouth, being Constable there in 1646, the year in which he asked for the accounting of William Palmer's estate. He died intestate at Plymouth 25 Jul 1650 [MD 16:235 citing Ply. Col. Rec.], leaving a widow named Mary. Nowhere in the Colony records up to the time of his death do we find the name of his wife. Many of the Plymouth records have been lost or destroyed, and if the children were recorded when born, they are not found in the records now extant. However, we find the following {PCR 8:25; MD 17:185] , which is somewhat difficult to understand: :::"The Register of the age of some of the Children of Robert Paddocke Deceased::* Imprimis William Palmer the son in law [step son?] of the said Robert Paddocke: was borne the 27th of June 1634 [sic; mis-written entry for 1638]; :* Zacariah Paddocke the son of Robert Paddocke was borne the 20th of march 1636; :* Mary the Daughter of Robert Paddocke was borne the tenth of March 1638; :* Allis the Daughter of Robert Paddocke was borne the 7th of March 1640; :* John the son of Robert Paddocke was borne the first of Aprill 1643; : * there are two other that are before registered in this booke;" : Among the others there seems little doubt but that we should includeSusannah Paddock "of Dartmouth" who married "last of November" 1664 John Eddy [PCR 8:38], but since no record of her birth nor age at deathhas come to light, it is not certain... ::"On his death-bed Robert Paddock placed his youngest son John with Captain Willett [PC Deeds 1:198], his wife Mary consenting, and this sheconfirmed after his death, 19 Nov 1650. Ond 3 Dec 1650 [Deeds 1:195] Mary Paddock of Plymouth, widow, sold to Stephen Wood her house, shop and garden in Plymouth. There is no record that Robert Paddock left anestate; hence it would seem that the above property belonged to his widow in her own right.
