Biography

Robert Pottenger, son of Samuel Pottinger and Elizabeth Tyler, was born 23 Sep 1729 at Prince George’s County, Maryland and died before 18 August 1778 at Frederick (now Berkeley) County, Virginia (now West Virginia), the date his estate was appraised.

He was the vestryman of the Rock Creek Episcopal Church, one of the oldest churches in the District of Columbia.

Robert Pottenger married Elizabeth Willett on 19 Feb 1753 Prince George's County, Maryland. The daughter of William Willett and Mary Griffin, Elizabeth was born 1 Apr 1738, Prince George's County, Maryland and died 4 Jun 1777, Frederick County, Virginia (now Berkeley County, West Virginia).

Robert Pottenger and Elizabeth Willett had eleven children:

  • i. Samuel Pottenger was born 29 APR 1754 in Prince George's County, Maryland, and died 20 JAN 1834 in Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. He married Jane Gray ABT 1781 in Nelson County, Kentucky. She was born 1746 in North Carolina, and died 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky.
  • ii. Mary Pottenger was born 1756 in Prince George's County, Maryland. She married James Kercheval. He was born 1750 in Berkeley County, West Virginia, and died 1824 in Cincinatti, Ohio.
  • iii. Elizabeth Pottenger was born 1758 in Prince George's County, Maryland. She married Richard Iams 1777, son of John Iiams and Elizabeth ?. He was born 1745 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and died 1825 in Greene County, Pennsylvania.
  • iv. Jemima Pottenger was born 14 JUL 1760 in Prince George's County, Maryland, and died 1834 in Washington County, Kentucky. She married John Phillips. He was born 1753 in Maryland.

Indenture made November 24, 1773; Samuel Pottinger of Virginia and Robert Pottinger of Maryland, planters in consideration of 255 pounds sterling money of Great Britain paid by Thomas Duckett, merchant of Maryland has sold part of a tract called "Howerton's Range" containing 100 acres that part of a tract given by grandfather Robert Tyler to our mother Elizabeth Pottinger. Signed Samuel Pottinger, Robert Pottinger in the presence of and acknowledged before David Craufurd, Thomas Gantt, Jr. and at the same time Elizabeth Pottinger wife of Robert Pottinger relinquished her right of dower.
