brief biography

Rowland was born in Fillongley, Warwickshire, England in 1720 [SIC: 1725]. He met and married his wife Robin (also born in England) before immigrating with her to America when Rowland was age 25. Upon his arrival in America Rowland became an indentured servant to Thomas Stammers of Philadelphia County in Pennsylvania for a period of four years, ending in 1749. In 1765 he purchased 204 acres of Pittsylvania, Virginia farmland and he evidently moved to Surry, North Carolina around 1771, where he acquired some 1,500 acres of land. He was among those commissioned to build the first courthouse and jail for Wilkes County, North Carolina, formed in 1777. Rowland served Wilkes County as a judge, tax assessor and collector, overseer of roads, juror, and operator of the public grist mill. He also was a Revolutionary War patriot and served as a captain in the Wilkes County Militia from 1782 to 1792. It appears that he was also a minister of the Gospel, though his ecclesiology is uncertain. He adopted a 5 year-old orphan named Joseph Cartwright in 1778. In 1796, he adopted another boy named James Crane, aged 11. Rowland died in Reddies River of Wilkes County on October 25, 1806, leaving behind six sons: Nathaniel Judd, Sr.; Rowland Judd, Jr.; Robert Judd; John Judd; Joseph Cartwright; and James Crane. He also had a daughter, Elizabeth Judd (1769-1837).

It contains a few passenger lists, but he only appears in the list of servants bound before the Philadelphia mayor. A scanned copy of that record is on Ancestry somewhere, but it does not include a mention of a wife. I looked a few days before and after the date that Rowland was indentured, and found no women who seemed likely to have a relation to him. There still may be a wife, but not documented here.“
