Cheville, 88, of a nursing home at 1500 W. Truman Road, Independence, former presiding evangelist of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, died Sunday at Independence Sanitarium and Hospital.
Roy Cheville was born Rhodes, Iowa and had lived in Independence since 1960. He was a member of the Stone Church Congregation.
Mr. Cheville was ordained presiding evangelist at the 1958 RLDS World Conference and continued in this capacity until he retired in 1974.
He served on the faculty of Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, from 1923 to 1960 and was a professor of religion, sociology and philosophy. He also had been director of religious activities at the school and was the pastor of it's RLDS church congregation. He received the school's distinguished service award in 1967.
Mr. Cheville received a bachelor's degree in divinity, a master's degree in religious education and a doctorate of religion from the University of Chicago.
He was the author of books including The Bible in Everyday Living, Growing Up in Religion, Ten Considerations for Family Living, When They Seek Counsel, Scriptures for Ancient America, Spirituality in a Space Age, Spiritual Health, Meet Them in the Scriptures, When Teenagers Talk Theology and They Made a Difference.
His wife, Mrs. Nell Weldon Cheville died in 1957.
He leaves a son, Dr. Richard Cheville, Panama City, Panama; a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Farrand, of Washington; a brother, George Cheville, of Rhodes and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the RLDS Stone Church.
