Er heiratete die Tochter des Eisenacher Schuhmachers Julius Heilbrunn, Ilse, und führte nach dem Tod seines Schwiegervaters dessen Geschäft weiter. Der Versuch der Familie, 1939 nach England auszuwandern, scheiterte. Das Geschäft war schon im Jahr zuvor zwangsweise abgemeldet worden."
