Ruth Powell

Ruth4 Carman (Thomas3, John2, John1) was born about 1710 at Bethpage, Queens County, New York, and died after February 1735/36. She married first on 11 October 1730 at St. George's Church, Hempstead, Queens, New York to Solomon Powell, born in 1704 in Westbury, Queens County, New York, he died 23 February 1735/36 in Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York, son of Thomas Powell and his second wife Elizabeth Townsend. Thomas and Ruth were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) but according to Charles S. Powell, History and Genealogies of the Powells in America, (1935), page 31, "Contrary to the general belief, each one of the following Powells were married by the Episcopal ceremony, instead of the Quaker, or Friend's ceremony."

Page 427.--In the name of God, Amen, February 6, 173 5/6. I, SOLOMON POWELL [of Hempstead], being sick in body. All my estate of houses and lands (except household goods), are to be sold. My wife Ruth is to have 1/3 of the proceeds, and all household goods, and the rest to my three sons, Stephen, Thomas, and Solomon. I make Henry Willis, Jacob Seaman, and Barent Van Wyck, executors. Witnesses, Thomas Conkling, John Cowenhoven, Zophar Platt. Proved in Hempstead, February 23, 173 5/6.

Ruth (Carman) Powell married second, Jacob Hicks, born 14 June 1708, died 6 March 1769. He being the Great-grandson of John Hicks who had taken as his second wife Florence (Fordham) Carman, widow of John1 Carman and Great-grandmother of Ruth Carman.
