Samuel Allen was born January 8, 1631/2.[1]. Died about 1709 at about age 76 in Manchester, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of William Allen (1602 - 1679) and his first wife, Alice.

William Allen testified in 1645, "My sonn Samuell bo. 8th of 11 mo. 1631 by Als my wyfe."[2][3]

Samuel married by 1663 to Sarah _____ (unknown surname). Some sources say she was Sarah Tuck, but there is no evidence for this. Samuel may have had another wife prior to Sarah.[4]

According to Raymond Frederick Allen, Samuel Allen and his wife Sarah _____ (sometimes thought to have been a Tuck) had ten children[5]

Samuel Allen, Jr., born 4 August 1663, baptized 28 October 1665; died about 1744. Married Abigail Williams in Marblehead (nine children)

  1. John Allen, born 12 February 1666; died in 1737. Married first Elizabeth _____; married second, Margaret Hilton. (Ten children said by first wife; one by second.)
  2. Sarah Allen, born 12 March 1668; married 4 December 1684 to William Hassam of Marblehead.
  3. William Allen, born 18 March 1670; d. Windham, Connecticut, 15 December 1747.
  4. Joseph Allen, born 26 June 1672; died 17 August 1727; married first, 28 October 1696 to Catherine Leach (born 1 October 1680; died 1711); married second, 20 January 1713 to Sarah Knowlton, who survived to become his widow. (Seven children by first wife; four by second.)
  5. Alice Allen, born 20 September 1674; married Daniel Williams of Manchester. (See Alice Allen and Daniel Williams.)
  6. Rachel Allen, born 19 February 1677; married 14 June 1715 to Samuel Hutchinson of Windham, Connecticut.
  7. Elizabeth Allen, born 18 March 1679. (RFA believes she is the woman who married 3 February 1725-6 to Robert Leach, Jr.)
  8. Benjamin Allen, born 4 June 1681, baptized 2 October 1681. (Author provides continuing information)
  9. Jonathan Allen, born 4 September 1684, baptized October 1684; died 4 December 1768; married 1709 to Mary Pierce. (Twelve children born Manchester.)

Manchester town records include a report of 13 children born to "Samuel Allen and Sarah his wife," but there is an 18 year gap between the birth of the tenth child, Jonathan (as above), and the next child. Without further explanation, the additional three children seem an error in the town account.[6]
