About Samuel Arledge

Notes from Pam Wilson's Arledge Family History Project:

First in Fairfield Co, SC (HOH 1820 census Fairfield Co, SC 18-26 w/wife & 2 daus); then to DeKalb Co GA HOH 1830 census, HOH 1840 Humphries Dist, Harris Co, GA as ALDRIDGE, then to AL aft 1846; as ARLEGE HOH 1850 Coosa Co AL; HOH 1860 Marion Co TN

1820 Fairfield CO SC census: 152 ALDRIDGE, Samuel (000100-20100)

A Samuel (this one?) named as Moses' son in court case. 1820-1828: involved in a Fairfield court case, an extended legal case of John Woodward vs Moses Arledge (Fairfield County), in which Moses is described as an aged man, 55 years old: "the said Moses is now advanced in life and has no visible property known to your Orator of any value save the land lived on by the Sheriff aforesaid." Names Samuel as the son of Moses, and says Moses has seven children. Case: Winnsboro Bill 7, 1828: MOSES ARLEDGE, SAMUEL ARLEDGE, William Strother and John Buchanan VS. Thomas McCullough.

1830 GA, DeKalb County (between John Roberson and Hughes):

ARLEDGE, Samuel

1 male under 5

2 males 5-10

1 male 20-30 (probably a brother)

1 male 30-40 (Samuel)

3 females under 5

1 female 5-10

1 female 10-15

1 female 20-30 (wife)

1840 Humphries Dist, Harris Co, GA: Samuel ALDRIDGE (between Hornsby and Basemon):

males: 2 (under 5)-4 (5-10)-5 (10-15)-1 (15-20)-0-1(30-40)

females: 2 (under 5)-0-0-0-1 (20-30)-1 (30-40)

Slaves: one female under 10, one female 10-24

Looks like Samuel and Molly were in GA until at least 1845, based on locations of children's births. A William Arledge (wife Milly), who was probably Samuel's brother, seems to have migrated along with them. By the 1850 census this brother William was head of household in Tallapoosa Co, AL (as ALDRAGGE), while Samuel was in nearby Coosa County. William and his family were in Coosa County by 1860 and thereafter.

1850 Alabama census for Coosa County (Coosa District #594/594):

ARLEGE Samuel 53 M SC Farmer $250

Moley 51 F SC (can't read or write)

By 1860, it appears that Samuel and Molly have separated; he has gone to Marion County, TN, where several of his sons (James, Jack, and a son with unknown name who left a widow named Mary and three children by the 1880 Marion County census) have gone to farm and work in the coal mines. Molly has remained in Coosa Co, AL, where she is listed as head of household in 1860 and living with daughter Cynthia Roberson in 1870. Children Cynthia (Robertson), Samuel, Nicholas, Joseph, Thomas J. Emily (Hamilton), Sarah (Gray) and the widows of two other sons apparently settled in the Coosa and Chilton County area of Alabama.

In 1860 Samuel is heading a household in Marion Co, TN with son James and his wife Sarah and their children.

I believe this is his son Samuel's record, but more research is needed:
