Samuel was the son of Thomas Barnes, who settled in Marlborough, Massachusetts.[1] In 1691, Samuel moved to Brookfield with his family, his father having received a grant of a 40 acre home-lot.[2]
Samuel married Mercy Gilbert. They had the following children:[2]

Miriam, born June 26, 1716; married Daniel Jones
Mary, born December 13, 1718; married Ebenezer Cooley
Hannah, born February 25, 1721; married Isaac Upham
Abigail, born November 25, 1723; married Comfort Old
Aaron, born September 9, 1726
Lucy, born August 4, 1729; married Daniel Gilbert
Rachel, born September 19, 1732; married William Ayres
Samuel "had a grant of 40 acres at 'Matchuck' in 1710, and in all 314 acres." [2]
He died on October 7, 1733, holding the office of town treasurer of Brookfield.[2]
